Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Have you ever wondered about “when to be silent” and “when to speak”? It is an important discernment for me. Jesus has told us that out of the fullness of the heart, the mouth speaks. Jesus always spoke the Truth in love, and so did Mary, and so that is my desire.
I remember well, the words of a friend whom I knew to be a very prayerful woman. She had graduated from college, and had consecrated herself to Jesus through Mary. She was someone I respected very much saying these words (so long ago I can’t remember the context) to several of us studying in college:
She came to mind this morning because I was pondering the “silent witness” we gave yesterday at Life Chain outside City Hall. Over a hundred people standing silently, Many praying their Rosary as they held posters saying “Pray to End Abortion” and other simiar posters to encourage those passing by in cars or walking. That to me is a “Golden silence”, but there is another silence we all need to pray and ask our Mother Mary to help us to overcome, and help others to overcome, and that is the “Yella” silence born of cowardice and fear for ourselves lest we receive ridicule or distain or the anger of others. Mary our Mother was not afraid to say her “Yes” to God when He asked what seemed impossible. She trusted in God and did not worry about herself for she belonged to Him.
Let us pray for one another, for the Church and for all those in most need of God’s Mercy, that we may know when to be silent witnesses to the Truth as Jesus was before Herod, and when to speak the Truth as He spoke to Pilate. Let us be silent as Mary was at the Cross keeping our eyes on Jesus, as she did, and never be afraid to speak on behalf of others’ needs as Mary spoke to Jesus and to the servants at Cana. In silence and in speaking may we speak and do the Truth we hear from Him, lovingly.

“Yella” is the way I remember her saying the word “yellow” (yellow as in cowardice). It may be a quote from Will Rogers or someone more famous but I remember her words and I knew they truly were coming from her heart. She was never a hypocrite herself, never a modern day pharisee. She was far more concerned about the interior than the exterior. She was simple and very charitable. I heard recently she had resigned her position in the work she was doing for the disabled and disadvantaged – she must be into her 80’s now. She was a novice in the Congregation of nuns who taught at the college I attended. Her name was Sister Mary de Montfort.
