Also, single people who have no one depending on them do not need life insurance. If they don’t have enough saved to cover their own funeral, I suppose they could get term insurance for that. But otherwise, they really don’t need it.

Need? Perhaps not. But it can be a great blessing to someone.

My family’s really dysfunctional. I have a younger sister who, back when I was working and single, was about to go to college, though our parents weren’t helping her at all with that. My company, as one of its benefits, offered a life insurance policy for a year’s salary that cost nothing to its employees.

I made my best friend my beneficiary. She understood that my wishes were that if something were to happen to me, she should use it to pay for a bare-bones funeral for yours truly, and use the remainder to help my sister get through college. The arrangement was that she was to get a copy of my sister’s grades each semester. If they were good, my friend would pay the school directly for any tuition/fees/whatever remaining after her student aid. My sister’s a good kid, but was pretty immature, so handing over tens of thousands of dollars to her seemed like a recipe for disaster. This way, someone responsible would ensure that to the best of my ability, I’d have helped my sister with school but not with poor life choices, or in encouraging our mother’s substance abuse habits.

Obviously, I didn’t die , but if I had, my sister would have at least had some help with college.
