Yes i do deny it. How can anyone sitting at a computer think they can know the motives of another person on a forum like this?
I was serious and remain so. You are guilty of slander which is a false and damaging statement: a false and malicious statement that damages somebody’s reputation.
And what exactly was your “reputation” prior to your hit-and-run posts???

Inquiring minds want to know!

I don’t follow your reasoning here. If all men are fallible and fallible can and do err, then it follows that no institution can be infallible.
Unless the Word of God says so.

All men are mortal. Yet the Bible says Jesus is man and God… I believe the Word of God.

All men are fallible. But the Bible says that the Church is the Pillar and Foundation of Truth. I believe the Word of God.
Even your scriptural reference doesn’t claim that.
I used the same logical inferrence method you misused to arrive at Sola Scriptura.
In fact there are warnings in Scripture that false teachers would come into the church itself and decieve many.
Really. Let us examine those verses.
Even your own church has admitted mistakes
Not in doctrine.
and changed things.
Not in doctrine.
If she were truly infallible this would never have happened.
She is truly infallible as Scripture asserts and that has never happened. If you would like to discuss any such misunderstanding on your part, lets do so, on another thread.

However, on this trhead, I’m still waiting for your proof of Sola Scriptura.

Sincerely,

De Maria

Pardon my poor eye-sight but, where is the word ‘sufficient’ written in the passage you quoted?
Can I know that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” and that believing have “life in His name” by what is written? If what is written is able to do this, then it is sufficient for that purpose. It’s not rocket science.

If John says I can know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God simply by reading what is written, then reading what is written is sufficient enough for me to come to that belief!

Yes, you’re eye sight is poor.

True, Christs sheep will never perish, as long as they remain in Him and in His one flock. they have free will to leave just as a sheep has free will to run away amnd jump off a cliff and be lost forever. To not have free will is to have a non loving God, but a controlling God.
I think you responded to my sig, not the post…

That verse says nothing more than that John’s gospel was written as an aid to believing that Jesus was God. Belief through scripture by itself does not make for true religion.
Belief through scripture by itself doesn’t ensure right doctrines or right practices. The infallible scriptures require an infallible interpreter. The Bible is composed of dead words on the page. It is not the living Word of God. The dead words on the page require a living tradition inspired by the Holy Spirit to ensure that the words are interpreted and understood rightly.
Funny, that is not what John says. After penning “what is written” he makes it perfectly clear what his purpose was.

Can I know that “Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” and that believing have “life in His name” by what is written? Absolutely. If what is written is able to do this, then it is sufficient for that purpose.

What a pompous attitude from a professed Christian to call the words of God “dead words” simply to advance your cause. That’s a shame.

But: that quoted passage was not written to bring about a belief that did not already exist; it was written to confirm the faith of a community of people who were already Christians.

So while the Holy Bible is sufficient for some purposes, that passage - like all the NT - is meant to be read in public in worship; not to bring about faith in those who do not have it. Unbelievers need, not the Bible, but the preaching of the Word. Once they are within the Church, the Bible is for them.
Do you disagree that by reading His gospel account, one cannot come to the said belief described by John? Are you not aware of testimonies where people have been convicted to believe the words of Christ simply by reading the supposed “dead letter”?

First you have to know why you believe the Gospel account to be true.

But, Jesus said that only those who do the will of his Father can enter the kingdom. And He told His Church that any who reject you reject me and the One who sent me.

I think what is important to note is the Protestant belief that Martin Luther set in motion, justisfication by faith alone.

Of course we as Catholics know that faith without works is not sufficient to get us into Heaven. We must pass through the narrow gate. The degree to which we lose ourselves in service to others (Matthew 5) is the only way to emulate He who is the Truth, the Way and the Life.

I will go with you on this one, OH. I think what is written is sufficient to believe. However, believing in itself is not sufficient. Jesus teaches us that those who believe in Him will obey Him, and this requires much more direction than a man can provide himself alone. That is why Jesus founded a Church.
