Can I drink any liquid (except alcohol of course) one hour before receiving the Eucharist or is it only water that I can drink?

…you must observe the Eucharistic fast. Canon law states, “One who is to receive the most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception only of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion” (CIC 919 §1). Elderly people, those who are ill, and their caretakers are excused from the Eucharistic fast (CIC 191 §3). Priests and deacons may not dispense one obligated by the Eucharistic fast unless the bishop has expressly granted such power to them (cf. CIC 89).

Hope that helps!

only water - but I do without it unless i’m actually dehydrating, after all it’s only an hour.

Thanks to both of you…that helps alot. Looks like I have to lay off the morning coffee before 7am Mass!

Take care

Good point - that 5 o’clock hour comes early some days

If Mass is at 7am communion won’t be before 7.30 - means you have until 6.30. Take your coffee to go en route if you want.

Note: priests celebrating more than one mass are exempted from fast between masses.

Note also: the communion fast varies in the other Catholic Churches in union with Rome. Some all the way up to “since going to bed the night before” or even “After vespers”
