Is the expression “godawful” implicitly a misuse of God’s name and a sin against the 2nd commandment? It’s not as obviously wrong as condemning something in God’s name. It’s a lot like the expression “God-forsaken” which contains the name of God but is not usually intended to imply God’s actual judgment on the corresponding noun.

Further, even if sinful, if it was said without thinking or without intending to invoke God’s name, would it be mortally sinful? I would have said not, although I do realize that these expressions are best avoided.

Well any term involving the Lords name other than to revere or respect it, shouldn’t be said. Naturally, I can’t expect God to be pleased when He hears a person attach His name to awful.

If it’s said without thinking there is no sin. In order to sin, we must have the intention to knowingly do something that would offend the Lord.
