I have a question that has been bothering me for some time and I would like to get some opinions.
I’ve read many times on these boards about if we die with a mortal sin on our soul we would go straight to hell. There is no denying that sin and temptation is everywhere and I’ve even heard that everybody sins an average of 7 times a day (I don’t remember where I heard or read that so I can site a source). If a person goes to confession on a regular basis and one day they commit a mortal sin and have every intention of going to confession at the first available opportunity but unfortunately die before having that opportunity of going to confession (i.e. car accident, etc.). Since God knows that individual was going to confess anyway, do you think that person can be saved, that is go to purgatory instead of hell? I really wonder about this. To help guard against going to hell, I made up my own personl pray and follow it with an Act of Contrition. I do this at least three times a day (morning, noon and night). I know it’s not the same as confession (I personally go to confession every other month), but the Church I belong to only has confessions once a week. I know that confessions can be made by appointment at any time but I’m sure priests don’t have the time if everybody called up all hours of the day and night to request a special confession.
Thank you and may God always be with you all.
