:shrug:I’m wondering if it’s a sin if if you tell a white lie outright when asked about something because you want to remain anonymous.

Ask yourself if the person asking has the right to know the information. That has a large bearing on the answer.

Let’s say you’re making large, anonymous charitable donations that has the neighborhood talking. If a reporter asks if you did it, do they have a right to know? Nope. A neighbor? Probably not.

What if your spouse asks, especially because he/she is noticing your family is short on money and can’t meet its obligations. They probably have a right to know.

That’s a great way to put it.
It was the person I did the good deed to that asked me, but I didn’t want them to know (hence anonymous) and also told them no when they asked me.

Yes but if they ask you “did you do it” it’s sorta suspicious if you don’t say anything or change the topic!
Only if you care what they think. I would follow it with “why do you feel the need to know?”

Nosy people are just that. They continue to be nosy because no one challenges them.
What’s the worst that can happen? They leave you alone? Problem solved.

😉
