I have debated a non-Catholic recently on a forum site. She said that the “sin of Onan” was that he lied to the Holy Spirit. And that Contraceptives that do not cause abortions are totally okay. She also said that this was echoed in Acts 5, with the sins of Ananias and Sapphira who “deceived” the Holy Spirit.

I wanted to know, what scriptural/theological arguments could I be given to show her that she’s horribly mistaken?

Scripturally, she simply does not know scripture. I’m trying to be charitable here but I cannot comprehend how anyone could read Genesis 38 and conclude that Onan lied to the Holy Spririt. The Holy Spirit is not mentioned at all. Onan refused to raise up an heir to his dead brother.

To understand the sin of Onan, one must go to the Mosaic law, which commanded that when a husband died without a male heir, his brother should marry his Widow and raise up a son. The son would be counted not as the son of the brother who married the widow, but would be counted as the son of the dead man and would inherit the dead man’s estate. Having an heir, perpetuating your name and perpetuation of your blood line was a big deal to the ancients. Punishment for not raising up an heir to your dead brother with your brother’s widow was public humilation…

*When brothers live together and one of them dies without a son, the widow of the deceased shall not marry anyone outside the family; but her husband’s brother shall go to her and perform the duty of a brother-in-law by marrying her. The first-born son she bears shall continue the line of the deceased brother, that his name may not be blotted out from Israel. If, however, a man does not care to marry his brother’s wife, she shall go up to the elders at the gate and declare, ‘My brother-in-law does not intend to perform his duty toward me and refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel.’ Thereupon the elders of his city shall summon him and admonish him. If he persists in saying, ‘I am not willing to marry her,’ his sister-in-law, in the presence of the elders, shall go up to him and strip his sandal from his foot and spit in his face, saying publicly, ‘This is how one should be treated who will not build up his brother’s family!’ And his lineage shall be spoken of in Israel as ‘the family of the man stripped of his sandal.’ (Dueteronomy 25:5-10)*Onan did exactly this in Genesis 38

*Then Judah said to Onan, “Unite with your brother’s widow, in fulfillment of your duty as brother-in-law, and thus preserve your brother’s line.” Onan, however, knew that the descendants would not be counted as his; so whenever he had relations with his brother’s widow, he wasted his seed on the ground, to avoid contributing offspring for his brother. What he did greatly offended the LORD, and the LORD took his life too. (Genesis 38:8-10)*God clearly took Onan’s life for wasting his seed and this is the scriptural basis for the Church’s teaching that contraception is a grave sin. Theologically, we have to look at the nature of God and then we can come to some understanding of why God demanded Onan’s life.

God is pure spirit. He has no weight, no size, no color, no shape. God has no material parts. God is a pure spirit as are the angels. Created things however, have material parts and physical attributes such as size, weight and color but created things, with the exception of man, have no spirit. Man alone has a mortal, physical body and an immortal spirit which is made in God’s image. So what happens when the created body and the immortal soul seperate? Death happens. So for a man to be alive, his mortal body has to be united to his immortal spiritual soul. If a person’s body is seperated from his spirit, he is dead. No spirit, no life. It’s just that simple. And the same is true of an infant in the womb. No spirit, no life. If an infant’s spirit seperates from its body in the womb, its dead. Stillborn or miscarriage.

Carry that forward to the moment of conception. Its really simple… no spirit, no life. The sperm can penetrate the egg but if the spirit is not present, no life results - no child - no conception. It is the man who brings the sperm, the woman who brings the egg and the question becomes that of the spirit; from where does it come? Christians say it comes from God. So when man and woman unite in spousal union, man brings the sperm, woman brings the egg and God brings the spirit. Sex is therefor a holy act in which man, woman and God are co-creators of human life! Awsome!!!

What Onan did was shut God out of the process. He used another human being for his pleasure but denied God one of the greatest things he does - unite with man and woman to create new life. The Catechism calls man and God “Co-creators” of life. God simply demanded from Onan that which Onan took from God - a life. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth… in Onan’s case, it was a life for a life.

This is one of the theological basis’ for the Church’s teaching on contraception. Under the new covenant, “Wasting your seed” still demands your life, your spiritual life AKA mortal sin.

No Protestant Church taught that contraception was anything but sinful prior to 1930. One cannot find any Protestant writing prior to 1930 stating that contraception was acceptable.

The Holy Spirit was not available to all believers before Pentecost–she’s got her chronology wrong if she thinks Onan had the Holy Spirit to lie to.

Excellent explanations…thanks! 👍

I think I made a mistake and didn’t clarify. Apparently, it’s that Onan was lying to Tamar and to God, and in her interpretation God slew him for his deception. But I don’t see that anywhere else in Scripture, not even in Genesis 38 at all. You would think that it would mention the word “deception” or “lying” in Genesis 38 if it was true. Any thoughts?

He could have been said to have been lying with his actions. The text puts emphasis on the “did” of Onan, not what he “failed to do.”
What he did greatly offended the LORD And note more context:
10And what he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD, and he put him to death also. 11Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father’s house, till Shelah my son grows up"—for he feared that he would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and remained in her father’s house. 12In the course of time the wife of Judah, Shua’s daughter, died. When Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. 13And when Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep,” 14she took off her widow’s garments and covered herself with a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Enaim, which is on the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage.
… … 26Then Judah identified them and said, “She is more righteous than I, since I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he did not know her again.
Notice that Shelah was ‘next in line’ to do what Onan failed to do…but Shelah never did step up. Thus, it cannot simply be denying children that was the cause of God’s anger, else Shelah would have been struck down as well. Note that both of the previous 2 brothers that died sinned against God, but again, the first nor third were killed due to failing to raise up children.

So I’m not understanding if you are arguing for or against the fact that Onan was struck down for wasting his seed? My argument is just that, that Onan wasted his seed and that is what greatly offended the Lord and so cost him his life.

Genesis 38 is silent on what Er did to offend the Lord.

Shelah never had relations with Tamar and so he denied God nothing. He did not fulfill his obligation under the law to raise up an heir to Er but the punishment for that was humiliation, not death. It was the wasting of the seed which offended the lord, denying God the opportunity to unite with man and woman in the spousal act as co-creators of human life.

Not fulfilling one’s obligation to have sex with his wife is not the same as actually having sex and wasting the seed. Thus Onan died and Shelah did not. Shelah simply did not peform his marital duty. Onan however, used Tamar for his personal enjoyment andat the same time denied God his right to participate in the creation of another life. This is the Catholic intperpetation of this passage and one of the basis’ for the Church’s teaching thatcontraception and masturbation - deliberately excluding God from the process - are grave sins.

So I’m just confused as to your position. Did = spilled his seed?

-Tim-

My opinion…

Onan’s crime was his disobedience to God.

If “wasting his seed” was a serious crime to the Jews of that time, it would have been listed in Leviticus. Examine the detailed lists of Leviticus. If wasting your seed was a crime, it would have been listed within the passages against incest, sodomy, bestiality etc. With all the other things mentioned, it was certainly not too taboo to talk about. Since it is not mentioned here, the churches stance against masturbation gets no Biblical support from Onan or Mosaic law.

Note that the penalty for failure to marry the brother’s widow was not death .
7 And if the man does not wish to take his brother’s wife, then his brother’s wife shall go up to the gate to the elders, and say, ‘My husband’s brother refuses to perpetuate his brother’s name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a husband’s brother to me.’ 8 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak to him: and if he persists, saying, ‘I do not wish to take her,’ 9 then his brother’s wife shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, and pull his sandal off his foot, and spit in his face; and she shall answer and say, ‘So shall it be done to the man who does not build up his brother’s house.’ 10 And the name of his house* shall be called in Israel, The house of him that had his sandal pulled off.

You might want to think this one over a little. Start with Gen. 1:2 and go from there.

I totally agree.

Actually, I agree with those who say that the origins of masturbation being sinful probably come from the fact that ancient people believed that the male seed contained the entire child and that the woman was merely an incubator into which the seed was placed. Thus the waste of seed was a type of killing of the *very *young.

The residue of this error in biology from thousands of years ago is that some continue to condemn something harmless, normal, totally natural, and probably beneficial because it is easier to do that than admit that our understanding of the “truth” can change.

Making sure that it stays a “grave matter” requires volumes of esoteric pious sounding writings that most can neither understand nor relate to.

It sounds so clinical, yes, simple matters of errors in biology and a more inlightened understanding of the truth. But the unspeakable things you think about when you do it bears testimony against you.

In sensus plenior, the voice of the judge speaks to the sin of Onan.

Er was properly called ‘Awake’ which in the language of riddle makes him represent Adam. ‘Awake’ is the opposite of ‘asleep’. ‘Asleep’ is used for ‘dead’. ‘In the dust’ is used for ‘dead’. So Er was called ‘Alive from the dust’ as was Adam, and died because of sin as did Adam. But notice that Adam died spiritually the day he sinned. Er’s physical death was a pointer to Adam’s death.

Onan was named ‘vigorous’ but we are told that the name does not apply to him. (He was named by his mother). Onan was supposed to beget living children just as Israel was supposed to beget spiritually living children. Onan’s deed is a prophecy that Isreal will also refuse to do their duty and will instead waste their seed, children in the earth/flesh.

Shelah represents Joseph in the prophecy. They were both next in line to bear the child of promise, but are not given the chance.

Judah represents God in the prophecy and meets Tamar who represents Mary before Timanth (meaning the appointment), the appointed time of Christ.

When Judah says he will ‘send’ a goat, the word he uses means ‘sow’ as a prophecy that God would sow the scapegoat, saying to Mary "He will save his people from their sin.

Both Tamar and Mary wanted an assurance of the promised goat.
They each got three things.

The rod … told the power of God would over shadow her.
The signet ring… told he would be called the Son of the Most High
Bracelets (an indicator that an empty vessel is not unclean)… told it was a holy thing within her.

When they were discovered to be pregnant, they were both threatened. When they discovered who the real father was, they were both honored.

Tamar bore twins, and Mary bore the dual-natured God-Man.
Their names mean ‘breaking forth’,‘rising sun’ and Jesus was called Dayspring.
In the wrestling match in the womb, the second son was born first continuing the usurping second son theme of Isaac and Jacob to show that Jesus, as the second man, would get the inheritance that Adam squandered.

So Onan’s sin was that of being a person of the flesh, rather than a person of spirit. This is the same indictment against Israel. Spilling his seed was only one symptom of his condition and it was used by God to prophecy against Israel, and make a promise of the virgin birth.

No single act condemns a man. But a single act may be so demonstrative of his heart condition that God judges him at that time.

I have to agree with this. Leviticus describes being pure before coming into the temple and mentions having a ‘discharge’ as cause to take remedial action before entering the temple. The remedy is to essentially take a bath. This would be a nocturnal discharge. The standing order or law is to give your brother’s widow a child. When the Lord tells you directly to do it, there is an emphasis on this action to be done without question and most likely with due haste. He disobeyed a direct order(from the Almighty no less…), which carries more severity than disobeying a general order. His willful disobedience to the Lord directly telling him to do something was the reason he was killed. Masturbation really isn’t mentioned in the OT one way or the other pertaining to it being a sin. I agree with the CCC of course, but Onan isnt a good way to argue your case.

I have to ask: where did this theology come from? I always thought that the Holy Spirit has had an integral part in the formation of mankind, Jesus’ ministry and the Church.
It’s not like the Holy Spirit was waiting around for something to do. As an equal and eternal aspect of the one God, it seems ridiculous that He would not have had a significant role in everything from Creation to Now.

This is a quote from St. Jerome that must be taken with some weight of authority in regards to this matter.
…, or Onan who was slain because he grudged his brother seed. Does he imagine that we approve of any sexual intercourse except for the procreation of children?

Greetings in the Lord!

“Small wonder, therefore, if Holy Writ bears witness that the Divine Majesty regards with greatest detestation this horrible crime and at times has punished it with death. As St. Augustine notes, ‘Intercourse even with one’s legitimate wife is unlawful and wicked where the conception of the offspring is prevented. Onan, the son of Juda, did this and the Lord killed him for it’ ” (Pope Pius XI, Casti Connubii).

And Pope John Paul II most accurately drew out the sap of Genesis 30:1-2:

“When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, ‘Give me children, or I shall die!’ Jacob’s anger was kindled against Rachel, and he said, ‘Am I in the place of God, Who has withheld from you the fruit of the womb?’ ” (Genesis 30:1-2)

“Contraception is to be judged objectively so profoundly unlawful, as never to be, for any reason, justified. To think or to say the contrary is equal to maintaining that in human life, situations may arise in which it is lawful not to recognize God as God” ( on Oct.10, 1983L’Osservatore Romano).

Also, don’t miss Genesis 35:11: “I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply.” Keep in mind when reading this verse that this instance of the command comes after Jacob has already fathered eleven sons and a daughter!!! 🙂 In other words, it is not for us as humans to decide the when of the fulfillment in quantity of God’s command to “be fruitful and multiply.” This command is given to us not once or twice, but four times by the Scriptures in precisely this form (cf. Gen. 1:28, 9:1, 9:7, 35:11). And we are often shown that its being brought about is a reward and sign of being in friendship with God (cf. Lev. 26:9; Jer. 23:3). We can never take action to cause opposition to the command to “be fruitful and multiply” whenever marital intercourse is in view. 👍

In Christ,
Pete

He has, ever since Genesis 1:2 and that gets about as close as you can get.
