Hello everyone! I have a little question about rap music. While I listen to lots of different genres, I do enjoy some songs that would be considered rap. I never listen to any rap songs with curse words or dirty messages, because I don’t want to dwell on that kind of stuff, but there are some rap songs that have good messages and that I enjoy. Is this wrong? Besides lyrical content, is there some kind of checklist that a song has to meet in order for it to be appropriate for Catholics?

Listening to music, of any genre, is not intrinsically evil. Intention and circumstances matter here. Why are you listening to it, what effects will it have on yourself and neighbor, etc. Ask and answer for yourself. If intention and circumstances/effects are good, then it is fine. The Church doesn’t make petty genre distinctions, music changes radically so often anyway. Have fun. And here’s a rap song:

Not necessarily a sin to listen to it, but to refer to it as music is questionable 🙂
