Anyway, enough of my musings and back to the point… I think this makes better sense now… from what I understand… the confessing/penance isn’t the ‘Act’ of the ‘Act of Contrition’ then… the ‘Act’ is the desire and intent to do those things?
Thats right, it is an act of expressing to God how sad you are about your sins followed by your promises to Him to make things right with Him again by going to confession and doing penance which you ask Him to help you to do.

The acts of confessing and doing penance are things you are going to do in the future.

Oh, lightbulb when on, Advocatus Fidei!!! I think I got it now. It only took reading and rereading your post about 10 times before it finally ‘clicked!’
Penance could be a prayer, doing something kind for someone, refraining from a favorite food or snack for a day, etc. It need not be anything drastic! At any rate, it can never be wrong to pray to God and be sorry for your sins, and to offer penance. So give it a try and see how it feels. Also, please talk with a priest. Priests love to guide people like you.
I would like to do something so this helps. 🙂 I understand I can’t make things right by my own efforts and this wouldn’t make this right in and of itself either… I just feel bad knowing I’ve done something wrong and want to do something about it and I felt stuck without being able to take the route most Catholics can follow (confession/communion). Its a bit hard to finally learn and believe about the seriousness of sin… and then learn the only way you can deal with it is a process currently closed to you. (Now that I’m not overcome with worry about it, that’s actually kind of a funny. ) However, this is good… this is something I can do over the next year while waiting for baptism without getting overwhelmed by guilt. Like your earlier posts, this is very helpful and relevant to me specifically. The prayer you reference earlier, the ‘Spiritual Communion,’ one, was a great suggestion too.

I’m going to develop some courage and will request an appointment to speak with one of the priests about intending to enroll in RCIA (as suggested in this thread). I appreciate everyone’s kindness in explaining to me what an ‘Act’ is… I’m an adult asking questions that seem to be common knowledge so the patience of so many has definitely made me feel less self conscious about moving forward with the conversion process.

On thing you can do is pray…

Lord Jesus Christ…I Believe in you, I hope in you, I love you!

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because of thy just punishments, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of Thy grace to sin no more and to avoid the near occasion of sin. Amen.

Baptism will wash away all sin. You will begin Confession after baptism - for sins committed after you are baptized.
