Since I was baptized Catholic, may I receive Holy Communion on my own?

If I was baptized as Catholic but taken out of the Catholic church by my father then do I need to go through RCIA classes before I can take Holy Communion even though I was watching Mass on TV

Dear friend,

We don’t “take” Holy Communion. It is given. We receive it. Before receiving Holy Communion you do some instruction in what it means to be a Catholic and on what the Church teaches regarding the Eucharist and the sacrament of Penance or Confession as it is more commonly known.

The RCIA is for non-Catholics who want to join the Church. But you are already a Catholic. So you need to talk to a priest about receiving some instruction regarding the faith. You are in my prayers.

Fr. Vincent Serpa, O.P.
