I just wanted some opinions about what I should do about a situation.

Last Sunday we had a a visiting missionary from The Sisters of Charity. After Fr. read from the gospel, instead of him giving the homily, the Sister spoke instead. I don’t know if what she gave would be considered a homily because she spoke about the missionary work the Sisters do in Korea and China.

I know the GIRM speaks very clearly that only priests are allowed to give the Homily. Is what Sister gave still considered a Homily because she spoke during the time set-aside for the Homily? And, if what happened was wrong, how do I approach Fr. to discuss it with him?

Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut. It’s greatly appreciated.

I think that was wrong. We have had visiting missionaries before, but they waited until after communion to give their message. One time the priest gave the homily, and then allowed the missionary to speak. I believe that is the proper way.

The GIRM also allows deacons to give the homily. In our parrish, guest speakers talk after Communion and either the pastor or I give the homily.

Tell Father that you appreciate the legitimate need for the woman religious to address the assembly at some point, but your understanding of Church law is that the homily is reserved to a priest or deacon (canon 767§1). This would be the least confrontational way. He may have simply failed to have the law in mind for one reason or another at the time.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops have issued particular law to reinforce this. Partly the text reads, “In providing for preaching by the lay faithful the diocesan bishop may never dispense from the norm which reserves the homily to the sacred ministers (c. 767§1; cfr. Pontifical Commission for the Authentic Interpretation of the Code of Canon Law, 26 May 1987, in AAS 79 [1987], 1249). Preaching by the lay faithful may not take place within the Celebration of the Eucharist at the moment reserved for the homily.”

The full text is available at usccb.org/norms/766.htm

God bless

Is this a regular happening at your church? If not, I wouldn’t bring it up to the priest. If it is, then discuss it with him.

Our parish has a missionary come in once a year (usually in the summer) to raise money. It’s always been a priest. He says Mass that weekend and during the homily talks about the mission work his order does. I’d never thought about when a misisonary that was a nun would speak. Interesting.

Our new priest did this the second week he was here. It’s inappropriate at best. The nun he had speak was not in habit, but there was a second collection after Communion. I may have not handled this properly, but since there was no homily, and she was not in habit, I didn’t donate.

Nuns in habits melt my heart. However, they melt it when they speak AFTER Communion. 🙂

Sue,
After some of the posts you write about the Diocese of Detroit, I wonder what is REALLY going on there?

We had a Sister speak at our church a few months ago, but Father gave his Homily first. What was cool was that the Homily ALSO fit for what the Sister was bring up in her talk. It was like hearing the Sister talk gave NEW meaning to the Homily which our Pastor talked about.

IF done correctly, BOTH presentations can work together and be Just as powerful.

She and the priest broke the law. The so-called mass was not a Mass in a Catholic rite. There is no Catholic rite in which a lay person can give the homily.

And it seems that the Catholic Church has no authority to enforce the laws regarding what goes on in church on Sunday.

Therefore, this is just more evidence that the Catholic Church has no authority say that it is a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sunday.

We had a visiting missionary today…He used to be a member of our parish…Anyway, R. spoke in place of the priest’s homily. Actually, there really was no homily…Father D. didn’t preach, and the missionary spoke about his mission. No one seemed to care that this happened…

It is pretty sad that the only time a church as a community can share experiences is by making you listen during Mass… something you’re obligated to be at.

Why not actually have a coffee hour or breakfast after mass, invite Sister Save the World to speak
AND SPEND TIME with EACH OTHER?

I forgot, it’s totally Christian to go to Mass on Sunday, run out before the end, and run over fellow parishoners.

I disagree that if it only happens once a year not to mention it. Our bishop allows for our parish life director nun to give homilies and what should have been an every now and then is now happening on a regular basis. She even allowed a teacher from our school talk! All clearly wrong. What is hard for me is that she can give wonderful talks and I do feel like they inspire, but one abuse has turned into another. Speak up!
