Sit or stand during The Gloria

Well everyone sat when the priest did. Then the Gloria started up and one by one people started to stand until more then half were standing, including me. Honestly it seemed like the people who knew the mass the best were the ones standing back up, so that’s what I did. I remember the previous Sunday standing the entire time during the Gloria without any mix up. I do not remember though if the priest was standing on that Sunday.

Edit. This was not a 20 minute Gloria. 3 minutes? it seems like sung in Latin during OF mass at 11:00 in the Cathedral of the diocese.

True. If the priests sits because of a lengthy polyphonic arrangement (Vivaldi’s *Gloria *takes 23 minutes), the people generally sit, as well, in both OF and EF.
There’s no provision for that in the GIRM. It says stand from the Entrance until the readings. Of course there’s no fear I’ll have to make that decision in my parish – the odds of having a lengthy polyphonic arrangement of the Gloria are about the same the odds of Pluto crashing into Mercury.

In any case,

OF: Standing all throughout.
EF Low Mass: kneeling.
EF High Mass. Standing when the priest stands. Sitting when the priest sits.

I went to mass today and thought of this forum.

It was an EF mass. It was a low mass.

We knelt for the prayers at the foot of the cross until the Gloria. We stood for the Gloria for about 15 seconds. Then the priest sat and we sat as well.

🤷

The traditional way was, that for solemn of polyphonic Gloria the priest, after he read the text, walked to the seat and sat there until the end. Also people sat. For shorter Gloria the priest jut stood at the altar, and there was no rule, what people do.

For new Mass is polyphonic Gloria is sung by the choir the priest usually sits down, and I believe it is the proper for the people too. For shorter Gloria either the priest and the people stand.

The thumb rule, do what the priest does, except there is rule otherwise (e.g. sat for sermon, kneel for the Canon)
My former parish did a Latin OF mass and sometimes if there was a long polyphonic Gloria, the priest and congregation would sit.
