Conservative priests, Latin Mass in store for St. Katharine Drexel
Code:
A fledgling conservative religious order whose priests specialize in the Latin Mass is taking over leadership of an east side Catholic parish.
Code:
Three priests from the Chicago-based Canons Regular of St. John Cantius will live and work at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, 1720 South Grand Ave. E., which is made up of St. Patrick and Sacred Heart churches, beginning July 1.

It’s interesting that there wasn’t really a request for the Latin Mass at St. Catherine Drexel; rather, Bishop Poprocki said that the reasons for moving the Canons there is because of a diocesan need, in that…“Worshippers will make the Mass a destination, much like they do the Spanish Mass at Sacred Heart.” And that…“The Canons turned around a 19th century dilapidated church in a blighted neighborhood on Chicago’s north side,” and that the priests could likewise inject “new energy and a new direction into St. Catherine Drexel while respecting the different communities that make up the parish.”

I think it’s wonderful that the Bishop has seen the good work done by the Canons, and is giving them another mission, so to speak! 🙂

Indeed. That part about people driving great distances to attend SJC is very true, even at their OF Masses. (They also hold a well-attended Latin OF Mass on Sundays.) And they teach Latin and Greek to boot.
