Skipped Catechism classes

Hi!

I had to skip Catechism classes for several years but it wasn’t out of my voluntary free will. So, out of the 9 years I was supposed to receive Catechism lessons, I only attended the first two and last two years.

I would like to know the Church and its teachings and faith better. I realise that my Christian friends know their faith very well and I know very little, so I want to be able to defend my Catholic faith.

Any good idea where I can start from?

Also, is it a good idea if I ask a priest to help me in this issue?
 
It’s great that you want to learn the areas you missed out on through no fault of your own.

I would suggest that you ask a priest what he recommends. He’ll probably ask you specifically what you missed and what you want to learn more about, and then he can likely make suggestions. Alternatively, he might refer you to someone else who is a catechist and will have better information on what you might need. If for some reason the first priest you ask isn’t helpful, just ask another one.

To be honest, I have actually asked a priest but I guess he’s busy because he hasn’t gotten back to me on this, so I wanted to do some reading up on my own first.
 
Consider participating in RCIA. Many times (around here, anyway) Catholics will join RCIA for their own benefit, to learn more and strengthen their own understanding of the faith.
 
We give out free Catechiisms and Bibles at our parish. Make sure to ask your priest–maybe he does the same (although if you like reading it online, you don’t need a paper copy–I just like paper rathre than online printed materials!).
 
But I thought RCIA is only for lapsed Catholics and people seeking to be baptised in the Catholic faith…
 
Where are you from? I’m not sure if my archdiocese offers free Catechisms 🙂
 
Not really. Our parish has any number of regular parishioners who attend. I do every couple of years or so just to learn, ask, and support those coming into the church.
 
The actual Rite is only for Catechumens and Candidates who need sacraments of initiation.

But most parishes and instructors allow, and often encourage, others to attend the classes. For one, it’s always beneficial for everyone to have well-formed Catholics who really understand their faith. But further, it helps to build community! It helps current parishioners to get involved, and it helps candidates and catechumens feel more welcomed and accepted as well.
 
The Rites are for those who need to be initiated, but the classes are generally open to all. Each week, our parish sends out an enewsletter with the next two weeks’ classes and topics inviting one and all to join the class in discussion. I’ve participated many times as a helper or just an observer (though much like my online presence, I can’t be quiet very long and soon become a de facto contributor).
