My buddy went to the Philippines to start an orphanage and left me with his mom. No problem, except she’s got a computer.

I help where I can but her boyfriend just bought her a laptop for Christmas with Windows 8. She wants all the same programs that she has on her Windows 7 computer - including Skype.

When I go to download Skype, it talks about a Microsoft account. I don’t believe she has a Microsoft account on her Windows 7 machine.

Does anyone know what I need to do? Do I need to make a Microsoft account for her? Can she then somehow link it to her other account or ?

Thanks

I believe so. My brother just went through this with my parents’ new computer. The new computer has Windows 8 and neither of us had dealt with it before. He kept trying to launch Skype and it kept looking like it was trying to login without ever presenting a screen to type in any login info (he had been trying to do it on desktop mode as that is what we’re all familiar with). Then he noticed that Skype was already on the Start menu. When he went through that way, it prompted him to create a Microsoft account, which he did (even though my parents already had a Skype account). That enabled him to login.

I know Microsoft owns Skype now, so that’s part of it. Perhaps there is a work-around you could use to avoid creating a Microsoft account. But I’m not sure what that would be. It’s probably easiest to just create the account (as irritating as that is). My parents still have the same Skype user name when we Skype with them, so there is evidently a way to link the existing account through the Microsoft account creation process.

Yep! I went through the same thing! You go to Microsoft.com, make an account, and then use your Microsoft sign-in to log into Skype.

Do I need to make a Microsoft account for her?
If u want to, u can, as others have said. But there appears to be another alternative route (of not having to make a Microsoft account), that brinkman2310 brought up, in which u use the Skype desktop client instead of the modern Skype.

It seems a lot of people had this issue, too, on the Skype forums.

That’s helpful. Good to know that there is an alternative available.

I used to have Windows 7 and now have Windows 8. I haven’t even been able to figure out how to do any CDs or DVDS. Windows 7 was so much more user friendly. I used to just put a DVD in the computer, and it’d play automatically. I’m still not sure how to see “Rita of Cascia” or listen to my bachata CD!

Good luck with figuring it out!

From what I understand, it’s because of the removal of Windows Media Center that removed Windows 8’s ability to natively play DVD videos. One easy thing u can do to go around that is to download a third-party player. VLC player, a free, open-source media player, is one of the best free ones available. You should be able to play your audio CDs as well with it.

If interested, u can download it here: download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html

I love the player myself, actually! 🙂

Thanks for all the replies!! I’ll give it a shot this weekend.

Windows 8 in general wants you to have a Microsoft account.

I don’t recall have any special issues with Skype but I used my old hotmail email account when I set up my Windows 8 computer so maybe that’s why.
