Smith gets bail, ordered to practise safe sex

CFL linebacker Trevis Smith, facing a charge of aggravated sexual assault, was freed on $10,000 bail by a B.C. judge Wednesday… Smith appeared in a Surrey courtroom, where a judge imposed the following conditions upon his release:

• he must keep the peace;
• not attend any nightclubs or bars;
• obey a curfew of 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.;
• not be alone with any female under the age of 14 except his wife and family; and
• have no contact or visits with any complainants

Smith was also ordered to take reasonable precautions and practise safe sex, tell all future partners that he is HIV-positive, have no involvement in the sex trade, use condoms and surrender his passport if he has one…

“Our thinking on it is that if Trevis has not committed any offence, and we say he has not, then there should not have been any disclosure of any kind of personal information like that,” [Smith’s lawyer Paul] Harasen told reporters Wednesday. “That kind of disclosure would only be justified if he had committed an offence.”
