We all know it’s a terrible addiction and I’m firmly (for now) in it’s clutches.

The question I have is not about the bodily abuse involved and the body being the temple of the Holy Spirit, but rather, on the money it costs to smoke.

Cigarettes are expensive where I live, (rightly) and the though has occured to me, would the church think the money I spend on smoking immoral.

I earn a good wage, and my family want for little, but there’s no doubt we could still find better things to spend the money I waste on cigarettes on.

Although smoking is legal where I am, is the spending of money on cigarettes immoral and therefore sinful???

Abortion is legal but it is still immoral. Just because somthing is allowed under the civil law, doesn’t make it right. It is also legal to buy pornography and to cohabitate.

As for cigarettes, we have to remember that this action has consequences besides spending money and its not just consequences for the person who smokes.

I smoked for 12 years before realizing that it was a waste of money and I was not only hurting myself, but also my family.

We are all stewards of our temporal possessions. The $6 spent on a pack of cigarettes could buy a meal for a family in need.

I had wondered the same thing about my Starbucks habit. 😃

We are all called to be good stewards of the blessings God gives us. I think if it’s on your heart to even ask the question, then you probably already know the answer.

I smoked for years, so I understand your struggle. What allowed me to quit, actually, was attending a healing service, where I asked God to heal me of my addiction. While I dream about them sometimes, and every so often find myself wishing I could, I haven’t touched a cigarette in over 8 years.

I’ll say a prayer for you, my friend. :signofcross:

the same question could be asked about any expensive habit that is possibly health threatening, or certainly doing no good for us–the daily starbucks, as above, must-have snacks, paying to park up close instead of parking farther away for free and walking. It is a matter of overall spirituality of stewardship of material gifts, and making the judgement and choice in that context. Also it depends on whose money is it, and who else is directly affected by my choices. If my kids give up something they want or need because I have spent my last dime on my habit, that is a problem. I can’t count how many times my folks sent us to the store to by cigarettes (yep it was the old days) and milk, but there was not money enough for the milk, and we knew better than to show up w/o the cancer sticks (they both died of smoking related cancers, so my viewpoint is personal not necessarily rational).
