I am really a little concerned about some of my family members who pass around pirated tapes of movies and cds. I refuse to watch them or listen to them. Maybe I am being scrupulous, but I do agree that for someone to become a billionaire because of a recording is out of balance too, that scalping these recordings is a worse sin by far. It is stealing. Is this being scrupulous?

Not only is it stealing from those who created, produced, and distributed the pirated material, but it steals from all of us as we pay the inflated purchase prices for these types of goods in part to compensate for this theft.

I don’t know if it is stealing or not but man, I feel like you people on this site are so self righteous and judgemental of everybody. How do you refuse to watch them? Stick your nose up in the air and walk away?

It is stealing and being selfish. Why do they think that their entertainment is more important than the software writer or musical artist’s responsibility to feed their family? Especially small companies really depend on the profits to support themselves. I worked in software for several years, and software pirates cost us a bundle, trying to come up with security schemes to prevent folks from stealing. We could have made alot larger profit if the security wasn’t necessary.

I do appreciate your point, however I don’t think that mentioning a concern with somehting that is illegal and harmful to others is a righteous and judgmental thing.

It is a valid concen and should be reviewed.

I find your words lacked charity and you have been judmental of an innocent person trying to sort out a moral issue.

It is stealing and no, I wouldn’t participate in viewing stolen material.

Now taping it off of the tv and watching it later would be different (as long is you didn’t try to sell it), but renting and taping a movie to keep would be stealing and logging onto the internet and downloading movies/music without paying is stealing. It’s not judgemental, it’s stating a fact. Taking something without paying is STEALING!!! We all pay for it in the end.

No, I wouldn’t stick my nose up in the air, I would just walk away. Only if someone asked would I tell them why I was not watching or listening to it. There is a big difference in being ‘self righteous’ and being righteous. Are you ‘self righteous’ because you didn’t take money from someone who robbed a gas station?

I will say this as charitably as I can. I am a musician (non-professional). The discussion of copied and pirated material runs deep to my heart. I have had the acquaintance of several folks who write and perform music for their livelihood. The use of photocopied music, lifted tracks, copied and or downloaded copyrighted material is stealing.

Several years ago, I had a very long dispute with our parish “music Director” who made considerable use of photocopied music. This violated the copyrights of the composer, and did nothing to feed the children of the composers’ family. I also believe that God is not praised by stolen music.

I recognize that “everyone does it”. This does not make the practice correct, right, legal or moral. As Catholic Christians we are called to be a light to the world. To be set apart and live a Christ taught. We are called to live a higher standard then what “everyone is doing”.

I agree with not watching pirated movies, not using stolen music. If you I can’t not afford to buy it now, I‘ll wait until I can afford it.

I agree that my words lacked charity. I guess I was just trying to point out that most of the people in this world feel this way. I didn’t really see a need to post something like this because it is so cut and dry of an issue. No matter how you look at it, stealing is stealing.

Even as just an amateur musician, I have experience with this. I don’t like when people listen to illegally downloaded music or watch illegally downloaded movies. Legal ones are a different story, but few and far between (e.g., I put my music online and people can get it for free…but that’s because I chose to do it…this is not the case with nearly all the stuff that people download).

However, I’ve also been guilty of doing the same thing, but I’ve tried to purge myself from this stuff over time. I thought all was good until yesterday when I realized there was still some stuff on my computer; so I deleted it almost immediately. Even if we’ve done it before, the key thing is to make amends, delete the stuff, and move on without intending to do it again.

No it is not always a matter of being self righeous. Sometimes it can become an issue in morals and values.
My X son in law used to do this and from my house. I told him he can not copy movies like this. He joined a dvd club that sent all these dvd’s monthly copy them and pass them on. This is stealing and when others jeopardize your morals and values you have to stand up for what is right.
There is an old saying I have always used from a song.
You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything!
