I can vaguely recall back in 1952 the death of King George VI . I was at my grandmother’s and her sister my great-aunt came . They both took me home and put on the radio and I heard rather solemn music being played . From the looks on their faces , and the way they were speaking , and from the music on the radio I knew something sad had happened .
Forward a year , and I’m back at my grandmother’s to watch the coronation of Queen Elizabeth . We didn’t have a TV , and the TV at my gran’s was one with a very small screen . But not long afterwards , when a coloured film of the coronation had been made , the whole of my school was taken to the Odeon Cinema to watch it .
And the Queen has been very much a part of my life and the life of the nation for so long .
This morning I watched the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan , now Duchess of Sussex . I was moved when I saw the bridegroom Harry and the best man William walking together into Windsor Castle . You probably have to be a Brit to understand all this . After Princess Diana’s death it was as if the whole nation took to its heart these two men who were then just boys . With joy we now see the way they have grown up , clearly deliberately walking in the footsteps of their mum . And when they get married we love it .
Megan’s car arrived , and out came this beautiful woman to walk up the steps of St George’s Chapel for her marriage . Then the tears started to roll down my cheeks . Okay , I admit to being a sentimental old fool , but when I see beauty I see beauty and am moved by it .
I was amazed . If I were to have written the script of this wedding myself I would not have changed one iota . Even Bishop Michael Curry was great to listen to , basing much of what he said on the words of the Jesuit priest Teilhard de Chardin who has been very formative in my own thinking . I am looking forward to reading the bishop’s sermon when it is in print . There was a lot to ponder in it .
So , yes , a good , an emotional day . A day which only the Brits can put on . But at the centre a lovely man and woman who today start married life together and bring joy to many .
May God bless Harry and Meghan , Duke and Duchess of Sussex .
