I really don’t know what to do. I am a 33 year old married mother of 4. My oldest is 18 and has severe autism. I also have 6 year old twins and a 3 year old. I graduated with my bachelors degree in April, and I now work for the state. I work 40 hours per week for the first time and I am really struggling. I also am doing an online masters degree program.
I feel like I am not even a mother anymore. Between work and travel, I only see the kids about 2 -3 waking hours per day, during the week. Weekends I spend most of the time cleaning, because my husband works full-time, too. I miss my kids so much.
My mom watches the children while we work, but her health isn’t great and it is a lot of work for her. We don’t want to put the little ones in daycare and my oldest has no where else he could go.
I enjoy my job, but it is extremely stressful. I work with families who have experienced child abuse and neglect, so I deal with a lot of negative emotions. I don’t know if the job is worth it, but I feel like I would be letting my family down if I left and took a part-time job. We are finally financially stable and can start paying off credit cards and loans.
I want to be a mom to my children. I know that my job is important, because I am helping abused and neglected children, but I feel like my kids are missing out. Am I being selfish if I find a part-time job?
