I recently started at Catholic high school. I don’t know many there, but I was sitting at my lunch table and I overheard someone say that she doesn’t go to Mass anymore. It really upset me, but I barely know her so it won’t exactly be easy to strike up a conversation. However, hearing it upset me. I hate to see people leave the Church. Besides praying for her, what can I do?

If it concerns you I’d pray for her. There’s not much else you can do. And I’d prepare to hear an increasing number of peers say the same over the coming years in High School and if you move on to College as well. But if your faith is important to you, don’t let others dissuade you either.

Maybe setting a good example would be good.

All the best on your new school year at a catholic school

This is, unfortunately, nothing new. Mass attendance has declined considerably in recent decades. This is not just a Catholic phenomenon, it has happened among Protestants as well. We have to remember the early Christians, who lived their faith in a pagan world.

Set a good example. Don’t be afraid to share your faith with others.

Thank you all for the advice and well-wishes! I’d like to say that this was quite a lot more friendly than the comments on YouTube, even a Catholic channel.

Hey, it’s very good that you found this site. Since you’re beginning in high school, I recommend that you start looking into apologetics a bit. Many kids like that one you mentioned diminished in their faith because they didn’t know their faith well and how to defend it.

Catholic Answers’ main page (catholic.com) offers great apologetics information to help you defend your faith when it’s challenged, even at your school. The information will dispose others to come to supernatural faith

Keep praying for her, and for yourself to the Holy Spirit to give you the words you can witness to her with when you get to know her, and others like her. You’d be surprised how your words can affect others when spoken with love and confidence. (even if they get upset at the time you say them.)

I knew I saw that comment elsewhere. All the best. My advice, get to know the person. You have a wonderful opportunity to make a friend and re-evangelize them. It will be worth it. Also, I saw the replies to your comment. The people were flat out trolls. Secularists trying to trip up the young.
