So let's talk about today's readings 2/14/09

Happy Valentines Day!! But instead of being the day of
St. Valentine, it’s the day of St.'s Cyril & Methodius,

In Genesis, Adam & Eve eat the fruit, and God makes them
some clothes. Then He clothed them with them. That must
have been a little uncomfortable. He tells Eve, “I will intensify
the pangs of your childbearing”. Intensify from what? Wasn’t
Cain her first child? He stationed Cheribim and a fiery sword.
Genesis 2:11-14 names the 4 rivers that bound the Garden of
Eden. Two of them are names we know. So, what does it
look like at the point where the Tigris and Euphrates cross?
Has anyone gone there, or is it too wild and dangerous with
poisonous animals, or some other kind of natural prevention?

“teach us to number our days”

“again there was a great crowd without anything to eat”
I wonder why He worked this miracle twice? And still, He asks for no more than loaves and fishes to work His miracle. He
asked for only what they had. Also, notice when they had
7 loaves, He never said, “give me half” or “give me one”.
They had to give all they had, and it was enough.

Bede says,
The typical difference between this feeding and the other of the five loaves and two fishes, is, that there the letter of the Old Testament, full of spiritual grace, is signified, but here the truth and grace of the New Testament, which is to be ministered to all the faithful, is pointed out. Now the multitude remains three days, waiting for the Lord to heal their sick as Matthew relates, when the elect, in the faith of the Holy Trinity, supplicate for sins, with persevering earnestness; or because they turn themselves to the Lord in deed, in word, and in thought.

This was prior to any child’s birth!
He stationed Cheribim and a fiery sword.

Notice Genesis 2:8–Yahweh planted a garden in Eden; the garden contained two special trees (the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil); there are several references made to Eden or the Garden of Eden throughout the Old Testament; in the New Testament we find these passages which make reference to Paradise and the tree of life:

Let anyone who can hear, listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches: those who prove victorious I will feed from the tree of life set in God’s paradise." (Apocalypse 2:7–See also Apocalypse 22:2, 14, and 19)

It could well be that the garden planted by God was removed in respect to the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Jesus is the Creator; He brought into existence all that is seen and unseen (visible and invisible) out of nothing… so He did not need anyone to contribute anything to feed the masses; consider what was contributed as Jesus’ way to allow us to partake on His Divine Providence.

…as far as the miracle happening twice… have you considered that there were many more miracles that were not documented? Sometimes we can see the Oral Tradition right in the Written Tradition (Sacred Scriptures):

22 Next day, the crowd that had stayed on the other side saw that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that the disciples had set off by themselves. 23 Other boats, however, had put in from Tiberias, near the place where the bread had been eaten.
24 When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into those boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. 25 When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’ 26 ***Jesus answered: In all truth I tell you, you are looking for me not because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat. *** 27 Do not work for food that goes bad, but work for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of man will give you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal. (St. John 6:22-27)

5 The disciples, having crossed to the other side, had forgotten to take any food. 6 Jesus said to them, ‘Keep your eyes open, and be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.’ 7 And they said among themselves, ‘It is because we have not brought any bread.’ 8 Jesus knew it, and he said, 'You have so little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand and the number of baskets you collected? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand and the number of baskets you collected? (St. Matthew 16:5-10)

Jesus is admonishing both the people and His disciples on the issue of the miracles involving bread/sustenance; I doubt that if it was only one miracle Jesus would seek to enhance His status by claiming that there were more.

That is interesting… , thank you.

I wondered, after reading your commentary on the first reading, if anyone had ever been killed by the Cherubim guarding the garden of Eden.

Also, I agree it’s a possibility that God may have moved or removed the garden of Eden, and that Jesus didn’t need people
to perform any miracle. You’re right, many miracles weren’t
documented, and who knows but He could have performed the
miracle even more than twice.

…just as they were ment to live in the Garden of Eden till they committed their transgression…

This passage implies that child birth would not have been as unpleasant as it is; though I have no scientific fact, I have watched nature shows and movies where the birth of animals have been depicted… it seems to me that compare to human child-birth these mothers do not suffer as much (though I do not know if for “effect” the actual cries/moans were edicted out of the film)…

…Scriptures speak of many who were blind, lame, sick (various deceases), had demons (evil spirits)… Jesus even brought a few back from the dead… so it is very possible that some of these miracles were performed several times over during His daily Ministry…
