In this powerful first reading, I wish they would turn off the microphone and let a
man shout it, as Peter had to. At the end of the reading, Peter tells the crowd
that what they now see and hear is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Just what
exactly is he referring to that the people were seeing and hearing? The disciples’
testimony to Jesus, or was there something more that they saw or heard?
In today’s gospel, the soldiers are paid to say that they were asleep. But if they were awake, then what did they see? The women and the disciples saw an empty tomb,
and a risen Jesus. But what did the soldiers see?
The closing prayer of today’s mass says “Prepare for eternal joy the people You
have renewed in baptism.” How does God prepare us for eternal joy? When our
suffering is over at last, are we prepared for joy? In my own experience, I’ve always
had to recover from suffering before I could feel joy. I have never felt joy instantly after
suffering.
