Note that today’s first reading is just one verse after yesterday’s reading, where they
couldn’t even keep the people from sacrificing to them. Suddenly, some Jews come
walking up, and whatever they said, made the people stone him to death instead!
I wonder what they said? Isn’t this story strikingly similar to another Man’s story
where the crowd all shouted, “Hosanna!”, then the next week they crucified Him?
I couldn’t understand how they could change their minds so fiercely in one week,
but now these people changed their minds in a matter of minutes! They dragged him
out of town dead, but before the disciples could be completely sure he was dead,
God “resurrected” him! When Paul went walking back, what was the people’s reaction? the reading doesn’t say…
“I will no longer speak much with you”…“the ruler of the world is coming”…
He scared the disciples, I’m sure, because He called someone other than Himself
and His father “the ruler of the world”.
Today is the day of St. Pancras,
and St. Nereus and Achilleus, all martyrs under Emperor Diocletian.
