What about those animal rules? Are we bound to those? After all, we are Gentiles…
“No one has greater love than this,
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends”
This gospel struck me today. What does it mean to “lay down your life”?
Can you lay down your life without dying? Yep, we do it all the time.
We lay down our life when we go to work. We give it over to our employer,
even though we would rather do something else, in hopes they will pay us.
We lay down our life when we lay down our money, in hopes that the thing
we buy will bring us happiness, because we had to lay down our life for that
money. We lay down our life in the middle of the night when we go to the
crying baby, even though we would rather sleep, in hopes to give our child life
to the full. We lay down our life when we are helping someone.
We lay down our life when we make someone else’s life better, at the expense
of our own. In fact, every time we are doing anything at all, we are choosing
not to do all the other things we could be doing right now.
I bet there are a lot of people who can thinK up a lot of ways that we lay down our life.
Today is the day of St. Isadore, a farmer. He married a maid who also became a
saint. That must have been a nice marriage.
