Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles - Mass During the Day
In the title of today’s mass, both Peter and Paul are called apostles. Since Matthias
replaced Judas as the 12th apostle, are we to understand that there are now 13
apostles instead of 12? All during this past week, we’ve been reading the story of
Abraham. We saw how Abraham chose Ishmael as God’s chosen one. But then
God Himself instead chose Isaac as His chosen one in His own time. The apostles
chose Matthias by lots as the new 12th apostle. But supposing God chose Paul
Himself in His own time as the 12th apostle? Or, seeing as God put Peter in charge
of the church here, He is abiding by Peter’s decision for 12th apostle, even though
He would have chosen Paul.
In the first reading, God lets Peter out of jail. The reading doesn’t go this far, but it’s
really funny when Peter goes to the house where everyone had been praying for him,
and the maid is so surprised that she slams the door in his face and tells everyone,
“It’s Peter”!
I wonder how long he stood there till they finally opened the door?
Well, God let Paul out of jail too, another time.
“And so I say to you, you are Peter,
and upon this rock I will build my Church,
and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.”
How is it possible for anyone to read this, and decide they don’t want to be Catholic?

I love these words from the first reading:
"Peter said, “I have neither silver nor gold,
but what I do have I give you”
In my missal it says, “silver and gold, I have none, but what I have I give you”
And what do we have for those who ask of us? Can anyone give healing? Do we
give what we do have to those who ask of us, or say, “I can’t offer anything”?
So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1::twocents:
