“Far better for us to be the slaves of the Egyptians
than to die in the desert”
Here is where I most heartily disagree with the slaves. It is better to die in a desert
than to serve those who are serving the devil! This is the proof of how much God loved
them, they didn’t yet have the kind of faith that God was saving them for, and He saved
them anyway! Just like Jesus.
"Then the LORD said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me?”
Well, if Moses were ever to cry out to the Lord, it would be now. This is just like
the time the apostles had to wake Jesus up in a storm when He was sleeping.
He said to the storm, “Quiet! Be still!”. And today Moses tells the Hebrews:
“The LORD Himself will fight for you; you have only to keep still”.
Which things in our life are like this? What are those things in our life that we
are fighting a losing battle over? Is there anything in our life that God is planning
to fight for, and solve, and that we are just to keep still? I have heard it said that
the Lord can’t steer a parked car, but when is the time to keep still? Is there a
time that the Lord Himself will fight for us? Is there ever a time to stop “being busy
about the Lord’s work” and just be quiet and get out of His way?
I do not like today’s psalm. I take no joy in the destruction of Pharoah and his
army, except that the Hebrews were saved. I would have rather had Pharoah
turn and serve the living God, and his whole country too.
“Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.”
He said to them in reply,
“An evil and unfaithful generation seeks a sign…”
It doesn’t seem like they asked very rudely for a sign. How many of us long for a
sign today, even if we don’t ask for it? Of course, we have many signs already,
but don’t people get excited about a weeping statue or picture, or Mary on a piece
of toast? I was once given a beautiful cross inside a potato. It meant something to
me at that time. It was my sign that Jesus was with me in the most ordinary tasks.
God knows how to give signs to the faithful. I showed it to one friend who stood up
and said, “take it to the priest!”. Yet I showed it to another who said, “I’ve had
rotten potatoes before”. But what sign could Jesus give to the unfaithful? In the
story of the rich man and Lazarus, the rich man was told that “they will not listen,
even if someone should rise from the dead”. I guess that story was proven true,
when Jesus rose from the dead…
“Just as Jonah was in the belly of the whale three days and three nights,
so will the Son of Man be in the heart of the earth
three days and three nights”
— But wasn’t He only in the heart of the earth for 2 nights? Friday and Saturday…
does His time in jail Thursday night count as being in the heart of the earth?
