WELCOME TO THE DAY OF ST. THOMAS, my favorite apostle
I do not think of him as doubting Thomas. Before Peter ever said, “Lord, I would die
for you”, It was Thomas who said to the others, “come, let us die with Him”, when
they were considering whether to go to Jerusalem for Lazarus.
“you are fellow citizens with the holy ones
and members of the household of God”
This first reading is so important. We should read it again and again or maybe just
memorize the whole thing. It is the first thing that will protect us from the temptations
of the devil. What did the devil say each time he tempted Jesus? It was this:
“If you are the Son of God…” His first plan is to get us to question who we are.
We can’t fall for it. Like the line from the kid’s movie Lion King: “Remember who you are”.
R. **Go out to all the world and tell the Good News – ** and according to St. Francis, if necessary, use words.
I just want to tell a story I read about St. Thomas. It is a tradition, not something
that is known. Thomas went to preach in India and met with some kind of ruler
there who gave him some money, and asked him to have a temple built. Instead
of building a building, St. Thomas took the money and distributed it to the poor.
The ruler was furious and wanted to put St. Thomas to death. However, the ruler’s
brother was ill and near death, and the ruler went to visit him. In his deliriousness,
the brother said to him, “I have seen the great temple Thomas has built for you in
heaven, it is beautiful!!” And the ruler changed his mind about killing Thomas.
So what struck you about today’s readings? :bible1::twocents:
And what are your thoughts on Thomas the man?
