So let's talk about today's readings 7/6/09

“Taking one of the stones at the shrine, he put it under his head
and lay down to sleep at that spot”

How is this remotely comfortable? Has anyone ever slept outside using a stone
as a pillow? Isn’t a stone the opposite of a pillow where comfort is concerned?

“If God remains with me
to protect me on this journey I am making
and to give me enough bread to eat and clothing to wear,
and I come back safe to my father’s house, the LORD shall be my God.”

This is a strange statement coming from a God-fearing man raised in a God-
fearing household. The Lord shall be his God no matter whether he wills it or not.
It’s such an arrogant statement, yet we seem to expect so much more from
God before we are willing to follow Him with our whole heart. All Jacob asked
for was bread, clothes, and to come safely home… his wish was granted, despite
his injury.

And now this line from the psalm:
“Because he clings to me, I will deliver him”
So… what if he doesn’t cling to Him? Maybe He won’t deliver him…

Today’s gospel is repeated to us today for some reason. What did we not notice
last time? This version gives even fewer details. This one has the official saying
“my daughter has died” instead of that she is sick. But that doesn’t even strike me
as being of any importance.

Today is the day of St. Maria Goretti, a favorite of many here at the forums I notice…

Whenever I read about a stone or a rock in the Bible, I think about the Church. I am not sure we should always be “comfortable” with the “Church” but, hopefully we can find rest and peace when we lay our heads down “on the Church”.

The rest of the reading also points to building a shrine or a Church. But it is not just this one spot that the Church will be… it will be in all points of the earth. This is will become the body of Christ, in which we will all be called to abide.

That’s what I got out of the first reading anyway… just my thoughts.

Well that’s an interesting way to look at it, whenever I read about a stone or rock
in the bible, I always think of a primitive altar, usually the kind built for worshipping
idols. That is, until Jesus calls Peter the rock.

I appreciate that the mass is the same everywhere. Even when we are far away
from home, we always have a home away from home… But I wonder if it is the
same in all points of the earth? I haven’t been accross the ocean…
