For me Catholic World Report is one of the best. As is Inside The Vatican. I recently renewed my subscriptions to both.

I dropped my subscription to Crisis because of their support of the neo-cons and the war. They dissented, IMO, as much from Church teaching on this topic as earlier folks dissented on Humanae Vitae.

For traditional Catholics The Latin Mass is a good magazine but I find its total focus on the “way things were” in the earlier centuries too much. There is not enough news and specifcially evangelical news from the traditional community in the magazine. After subscrining for 8 years I am droping this magazine as I am Crisis.

New Oxford Review - I serioulsy think they are writing themselves into conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy as they once converted to Catholicism from Anglicanism. A very depressing magazine if you are an orthodox Catholic, but I just relucatantly renewed. As much out of following their possible move from Catholcism to Orthodoxy as anything else.

This Rock - good magazine for apologetics. Wish they carried more news about apologetics in addition to theory. But I renewed.

So what do you all like/dislike?

BTW. I know there are other magazine/papers. The Wanderer is way too radical and agenda driven as is Cahrtolic Family News. Never subscribed and never would though they must need subscriptions as I often get free isues with a deal if I subscribe.

There is National Catholic Reporter and Register but I find thgem all fluff with no meat.

Lay Witness - CUF is a very reactionarry group and publishes this magazine but the few copies I was given were not bad bad actually. You probably have to be a member of CUF to subscribe.

The Sower - read about it in ITV - published soon in the US by the New Hope Community this magazine is supposed to be very good for Catechesis. British mag which I may give a peak at.

Again, agree, disagree? Your own recommendations?

St. Anthony
US Catholic
St. Anthony and US Catholic (along with America and Commonweal) are the magazines that I read when I want to learn what the dissenters are crying about now. Other than that, I’d never recommend them. Same thing with National Catholic Reporter when it comes to newspapers.

I enjoy both Crisis and First Things. Regarding Crisis, I don’t recall them supporting the war but let’s at least be clear that there is no Church teaching on this. It is a prudential question about which individual Catholics are permitted to decide for themselves. That is not the case with Humanae Vitae. I am quite sure Crisis does not dissent from any Church teaching.

CUF is a very REACTIONARY group?
Nonsense, CUF is simply orthodox, nothing more, nothing less.
I would plead with people not to subscribe to US Catholic or the Saint Anthony Messenger (unfortunately), and to definitely avoid the National Catholic Reporter, as these magazines have gone against de fide Church teachings (this is especially true of National Catholic Reporter above all the others).

THIS ROCK is great.
CATHOLIC WORLD REPORT is great.
NEW OXFORD REVIEW is very good.
THE WANDERER is very good.
OUR SUNDAY VISITOR is very good.
LAY WITNESS (by CUF) is very good.
THE CATHOLIC ANSWER (from OSV) is quite informative.
THE LATIN MASS is good, but I agree too nostalgic for the past.

Jaypeeto4 (aka Jaypeeto3)

The Sower is the best magazine for catechists bar none, blows anything available in America out of the water.

I am a CUF member, and we are not reactionaries. Please be careful with your label-slinging.
The magazine lay Witness is excellent.

I “listen” to the tone, particularly the editorials in judging so-called Catholic perodicals. I stopped NC Reporter, even though the actual journalism is of a high standard in general, because of the whining and editorial slant which is making dissent merely monotonous and fractious rather than serious discussion. NOR is absolutely toxic in my opinion and has no claim to designate as a Catholic publication. NC Register is the best newspaper style publication, too bad it always arrives a week late down here.

I subscribe to very few publications any more, I simply cannot afford it, and those have to be limited to those I need for my work and my own spiritual growth. If I can read it at work I don’t subscribe. My personal subscriptions are Sower and TR. Most of the rest I can read at work. I still like Our Sunday Visitor and always have, for a family it would be my first choice.

I have to agree with you on that. I liked a lot when before it changed editors. Back then it did have lots of news and good articles.

I would recommend the Wanderer. I have always found it to be faithful to the Church and not radical at all. Catholic Family News is another matter…

Hi

I have been getting this magazine for 4 years or so, It has articles on current events, forum section, faithful information for families to lead a holy life and much more, it’s called The Immaculate Heart Messenger, it’s a quarterly publication by the Fatima Family Apostolate founded and directed by Father Robert J. Fox at the encouragement of the Vatican.

It’s a magzine produced by an apostolate that has been endorsed repeatedly by the Cardinal Prefect of the Pontifical Council of the Family.

Wanderer - enjoy many of the articles, you get points of view that you don’t get elsewhere especially in regards to politics

The Latin Mass - absolutely love it, love the history, the homeschooling, the traditions, this will be the last thing that I unsubscribe from

Sacred Music Journal - highly recommend it, a quarterly journal which you get when you join the CMAA for $30, I also highly recommend that you buy a membership for your music director and pastor, as a gift:thumbsup: 🙂

I subscribed to THIS ROCK for two years but the articles were often too difficult for me to understand. Does anyone else feel that way (or is it just me? :o )

Does anyone know if there is a magazine devoted to Divine Mercy? I’d be interested in a subscription to that kind of magazine (provided it is faithful to the teachings of the Church)
Thanks

Catholic World Report
Crisis – worth it for James V. Schall & George Rutler
Agree that NOR is getting to be a tiresome rant
Catholic Response
First Things
Lay Witness

I subscribed to Catholic Digest about a year or so ago just b/c I had a magazine offer and was looking for one more to pick out. It’s very light and fluffy and molded along the lines of reader’s digest. I won’t be renewing. I’ll probably sign up for Nat’l Cath Register (NOT Reporter) as I am a fast reader and hate getting things once every month or two.

The National Catholic Register is terrific!

if we did we would not admit it, we would not want Karl to feel bad

YEH, I AGREE. THE WANDERER IS LIKE READING STUFF FROM THE 1940’S. WE GET NATIONAL CATHOLIC REPORTER AT CHURCH. SOME WRITING IS OK-- BUT THEY CARRY ADS FOR THE GAY/LESBIAN CLUBS.
I LIKE ST. ANTHONY MESSENGER PRESS.
