I am hoping you can please clarify to whom the great whore of Babylon in Revelation 17-18 is referring. It was my understanding that Babylon was the code word for Rome (see ending of 1 Peter 5:13) - seven hills, kings, etc.
However, I am currently participating in a Bible study taught by Jeff Cavins (Matthew: The King and His Kingdom), and he said last night that the whore of Babylon actually refers to Jerusalem (see Revelation 11:8), “where indeed their Lord was crucified.” I read a note on the USCCB Web site that says, “not the geographical but the symbolic Jerusalem that rejects God and His witnesses, i.e., Rome, called Babylon.” Jerusalem also sits on seven hills, right?
In addition, I read that Jerusalem is the whore and Rome is the beast (see Revelation 16:17), and this destruction refers to Rome destroying Jerusalem in AD 70.
Anyway, I would appreciate a clarification here and what the Catholic Church officially teaches, if it does so on this subject. Thanks, and God bless.
