And you move to a region devoid of Eastern Catholic Parishes of your rite. By this I mean the drive would be more than three hours to the nearest parish.

Several scenarios.

In the first one, there is an Eastern Catholic parish within 45 minutes drive but it is of another rite. Would you go there? Would you go to a Roman Catholic Parish?

In the second scenario, there are not Eastern Catholic parishes under 3 hours drive, however there is an Eastern Parish of your rite in the vicinity (Oriental, Eastern Orthodox, or Church of the East). Would you attend? Would you go to a Roman Catholic Church? Would you do both?

In the last scenario, there is only a Roman Catholic parish, in the region. And a bunch of protestant parishes. Maybe even a Continuing Anglican Parish. Result?

And I’m sure there are other scenarios we could play with. Point is, how would you worship in community if you recently moved to a new region for a job or other reasons and there was not an Eastern Catholic Parish of your own tradition.

I’m really curious to see people’s responses. Thanks Ya’ll!

I would go to the nearest EC or RC parish. Not EO or any Protestant, and ideally I would never move to an area without an UGCC Parish or RC Parish. 👍

I live in Great Briton and new to converting to catholic leaning towards Easter Orthodox. It is 1 hour 20 minutes on the train to get to church. Its a bit of a pain with the expense of travel and time. Especially when you are out of work with medical problems.
Why have they not got more smaller churches spread about i dont Know:shrug:
They should do a online Church and when you have communion you use your own bread and wine. You even can do confession by email.
I have a RC church 5 miniuts walk from my house would they except EO going to their church for worship?

This thread could start some trouble LBL… :slapfight:

:stretcher:

As a college student with a minor in spanish I love how LBL just used pero in an english sentence like it was no big deal. Spanglish is simply a way of life.

As for the poster from Briton. The communion and confessions you described would be, to use a Western theology term, invalid. That means it would not actually be a real Confession with real absolution or a real communion wherein the transubstantiation occurs. I would suggest you go to the close RC parish until circumstances allow you to make the journey to the EC parish. Talk to the RC Parish Priest, he may be knowledgable about eastern practice and devotion and can help you out. If not, this forum can be a great resource.

In the first instance I’d probably make the drive to the EC parish, not matter which Rite celebrated or which sui iuris Church it belonged to.

In the second instance I’d go with the Orthodox parish, attending the Roman parish once or twice a month perhaps (or perhaps go to daily Mass at the Roman parish while attending Saturday night Vespers, Sunday morning Orthros and Divine Liturgy at the Orthodox parish).

In the third instance it’d have to be the Roman parish, although I’d suppliment that by at least attempting to pray the Byzantine Divine Office privately. Maybe I’d get lucky and there’d be enough interest to start a Byzantine parish in the area.

In any case this is certainly something that concerns me whenever my wife and I contemplate a move out of the area we are currently living in.

I’d go to the Eastern one. But if we’re staying there for a while, I might go to the RC one the next time. Depends on circumstances for every weekend.

I would still adhere to the RC canon law that I should worship in a Catholic Rite. I will go to the Orthodox for Vespers and Matins, if available, but still go to the RC Mass.

RC definitely. This sounds like home (Philippines) and there’s nothing I love more than Catholicism in the Philippines, even if its RC and OF. I was never hostile to the OF, nor I am today. I won’t think twice in attending an OF Mass.

If the EC is only 45 min away, and I can afford the drive, yes. If not, Roman. (I already drive 25 min to church as it is, when there is a Roman parish 5 min drive away.

Depends. If it is both closer than the RC, and ACROD or Ukrainian, quite probably go to the Orthodox parish save for the obligation fulfilling during the week of Nativity and Bright Week. After checking with my Eparch for permission, first.

the Roman parish.

Wish we had eastern catholicism in Norway. The closest thing is TLM and silent masses. The Russian orthodox church is probably the next close thing, but i don`t speak russian or church slavic langugages.

I am in this position and my situation fits closest to the last one, so I go to the Roman Catholic parish, while maintaining my Byzantine spirituality in my private prayer life, and have had to do this for a number of years now. My closest Byzantine Ruthenian parish is about two hours away, so I can at least make the effort to attend from time to time. I think with the rising cost of gas this will only add to the difficulty for some people who would like to attend the parish of their own Church if it is any distance away,.

In the first scenario I would definitly make the effort to go to the Eastern Catholic parish of another rite if it is only 45 minutes away.

Second scenario, I would probably try to attend some Saturday night Vespers at the Orthodox Church, and fulfill my Sunday Mass at the Roman Church.
