Someone in my parish is asking for some good reading for a social justice study group.

Right away, I suggested the second half of Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical Deus Caritatis Est.

Of course, other possibilities would be: the Catechism, the Holy See’s Compendium of Catholic Social Teaching, etc.

Does anyone have any other books that might make for (relatively light but still substantive) readings for Catholic social teaching [brief Scripture studies, personal biographies, etc.]

Thanks for any tips.

The best brief overview I have found is the 111 page “An Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching” by Rodger Charles, SJ (1999) Ignatius Press, and I would suggest reading all of Pope Benedict’s encyclical.

Fr. Charles also wrote the two volume “Christian Social Witness and Teaching: The Catholic Tradition from Genesis to Centesimus Annus” (Vol. 1) and “Christian Social Witness and Teaching: The Modern Social Teaching: Summaries: Analysis” (Vol. 11). (1998) Gracewing Press.

The two volume is for those who want to delve deeply into the teaching.

Fr. Charles hews to the magisterium, following Peter.

PS: There is also a 47 page Study Guide for “An Introduction to Catholic Social Teaching” (2001) Ignatius Press), and another good one, designed for younger people, is: “Citizens of The Heavenly City: A Catechism of Catholic Social Teaching” (2003) (Borromeo Books).
