Solemnity on a Saturday

Hello,

According to the pre-Vatican II breviary, when a religious order has their major feast (a solemnity for them) on a Saturday, is second vespers suppressed by first vespers for Sunday?

Is this the same for all orders even if they have their own breviary and thus their own rubrics (i.e., Carmelites, Dominicans, etc.)?

For orders using the Roman Breviary, according to the Pius X rubrics, the Second Vespers, with commemoration of the Sunday.

According to the John XXIII, the same. However, if the feast is of the Lord, no commemoration of the Sunday.

The Johnanine rubrics is the same if that Sunday happens to have a feast of the I Class assigned to it, either perpetually or accidentally.

However, for the Pian rubrics, it would depend on:
  • rank
  • Primary or Secondary feasts. The Patron of a religous order would be a Primary feast
  • dignity. e.g. A feast of OL Mount Carmel would yield to a primary feast of the Lord which is a Dbl. I Class.
