I just finished reading all the posts of this thread…a very interesting discussion.
As someone who spent 12 years in maximum security state and federal prisons (I was a thief and robber) and 1 year of that in solitary, I can attest to the need for it, the value of it, and the access to books, etc.
As several posts noted, prison is a predatory place and solitary is often the only way to keep other prisoners safe (my 1 year in solitary came about because I was caught with a knife on my way to stab someone).
Rehabilitation doesn’t work in prison unless the prisoner wants it and few do. Most criminals, including myself, enjoyed being criminals and accept prison time as the price paid for living the life.
The only thing that finally rehabilitated me was a combination of a good marriage, becoming a father and becoming a Catholic, all of which occurred many years after serving my final prison term.
