Dear Friends,
I thought I’d share some very special Knanaya Catholic Chant. The hymns in the following video are used during a very special feast for Knanaya Catholics. The feast of Kaduthuruthy Church, is a large pilgrimage that honors Mother Mary. The legend behind the feast states that Mother Mary (Marth Mariam) came in the form of an old woman to help the towns folk of Kaduthuruthy upright the large granite cross of church. Kaduthuruthy Knanaya Church, established in 400 A.D, is one of the most oldest Christian churches in India and one of the five most ancient in the Syro Malabar Church. The chants are very special because they are both in the language of Syriac and Malayalam but are done in the Syriac Musical Form of the Syro Malabar Church. The pump organ or harmonium heard throughout the video is the main instrument used for Syriac Qurbana and Syriac Chanting in the Syro Malabar Church. The hymn at the very end is actually what I have used as my signature!
