Maybe I can get some not-so-confusing answers regarding these practices in my parish.
  1. Can the wine be concecrated in a pitcher (flagon) then poured into glass chalices? I just recently read, on this forum, that this was ok as long as the precious blood is not poured from one chalice to another.
  2. We recite the Apostle’s Creed at every Mass. I know this is ok in Canada but my parish is in New Jersey.
  3. Is it ok for the priest to leave the sanctuary during the sign of peace? I thought it was only ok during special situations.
Why is it so hard to get the TRUTH regarding these practices. I hear conflicting answers from reliable sources.

Hi,

If you want to check these matters out for yourself–go to the USCCB site—Liturgy department
usccb.org/liturgy/index.shtml

under documents read RS

In the 2000 US adaptions to the GIRM, the pouring of the precious was approved in the US, but this was changed with RS
  1. If one chalice is not sufficient for Communion to be distributed under both kinds to the Priest concelebrants or Christ’s faithful, there is no reason why the Priest celebrant should not use several chalices.193 For it is to be remembered that all Priests in celebrating Holy Mass are bound to receive Communion under both kinds. It is praiseworthy, by reason of the sign value, to use a main chalice of larger dimensions, together with smaller chalices.
  1. However, the pouring of the Blood of Christ after the consecration from one vessel to another is completely to be avoided, lest anything should happen that would be to the detriment of so great a mystery. Never to be used for containing the Blood of the Lord are flagons, bowls, or other vessels that are not fully in accord with the established norms.

Glass chalices shouldn’t be used because they are easily breakable. The priest shouldn’t leave the sanctuary all ready since he gave his sign of peace to the people; “pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.”

It is not proper, I struggle with the same thing at my parent’s parish. Glass is not to be used, although crystal is by permission of the local bishop.

Unless you are going to Childrens’ Mass the Nicean Creed should be said.

Not under normal circumstances.

Hope this helps.

This practice was permitted by Rome and made into particular law by the American Bishops. With the release of *Redemptionis Sacramentum *the practice has been prohibited. Because of some canonical questions the practice continues in the United States. When the canonical issue is resolved I expect that the practice will no longer be permitted.

As has been noted, this is permitted for children’s Masses, but not normally for “regular” Masses.

This is permitted for funeral Masses and some very limited special circumstances, but should happen at a regular Mass.

The problem is that the first question you ask is very complex (there was a very long discussion of this a month or so ago). The other questions are fairly simple and straight answers should be very easy to get.

I read in the GIRM that the priest is to "show " the consecrated host to the people. Our priest holds up the paten and chalice together not the host. Annoying to me cause I like to adore the body and blood. What do you think, he’s the only one I ever see do this.

I believe that the canonical question has been answered by the CDF and the answer was NO!

Even more technical.

The priest should only use a Gold and if Humble a silver chalice, consecreted by a bishop to consecrete the blessed sacrements. Sometimes they offer the sacrements here in a glass or ceramic chailice.

In the storys about Saint Benedict, The CHalice broke when the wine was poisened. SO one could assume it was some type of ceramic or Rock.

What people do and what people should be doing are two different things. I do not see the difference execept that one costs $300-$800 or more and one costs $10. I do not think Jesus could afford a $1500 Chalice and perhaps he may have even made one out of wood? If he had a lathe?

You are correct thast the CDF answered the question. The problem here is that the CDF does not have the authority to answer a question of canonical precedence. The question remains for an authentic interpretation of canon law on this issue – does the CDF have the authority via an instruction to override particular law. According to canon law the answer is no. Since the CDF is a party to the *dubium *they may not provide the responsum.

Hey Guess What? Satans must be reading this thread. Today Priest consecrete blessed Sacrement in a glass pitcher, than afterwards poured it into 4 glass wine goblets.

Just wanted to add… I thought there was special dispensation from the cardinal for Catholic priests that used Waterford Crystal Chalice?

What is the proper procedure for the ECMs? Additional Gold or Silver chalices prepoured? Or to Pour from the main chalice into smaller ones?
