Some questions about Carmelite lay orders and the LOTH

  1. I know lay Carmelites are required to pray the LOTH 2 to 3 times a day, and in community when they meet. Do they have a special edition that they use, or do they just use the edition for the country they are in, with the Carmelite supplement for Carmelite feast days?
  2. Do the O. Carm. and OCDS each use a different supplement? I know the Franciscan lay orders have all kinds of different supplements as some saints have their feasts observed only by certain orders. Is there a similar situation for the two lay Carmelite orders?
Thank you for any answers.

Hi Tis, Happy Divine Mercy Sunday!

We use the breviary from Daughters of St. Paul, and I’ve had it since 1981. As I listened today to vespers with EWTN, I was impressed that their words were exactly as they are in my breviary. The one thing missing are the latest canonized saints, like Pope St. John Paul II, Padre Pio, etc. I simply write their name in my breviary on their feast day and log on to DivineOffice to be in sync with the prayers for these saints, if any are proper.

Our rule only requires morning and evening prayer, but I sometimes pray others on my own initiative, such as night prayer, and daytime prayer.

The OCDS (Secular Discalced Carmelites) use the regular LOTH for their country. Here in the U.S., some of us have the 4-volume, some have the one-volume Christian Prayer, and some use the iBreviary or Divine Office apps. (And some go back and forth between apps and printed.)

I don’t know if the O. Carms have a separate supplement. We of course honor many of the same saints, with some differences as to whether they are Memorials/Feasts/Solemnities.

The Lay Carmelites I know use Christian Prayer when in community (though I think a few of them pray the 1962 Office by themselves), but I’m sure most of them would add in the supplements for AT LEAST the important Carmelite feasts.

However, my guess is that they are much like the Lay Dominicans and don’t require the use of the Order’s Ordo. They most likely have the option to use the Order’s Ordo or the Ordo of their local diocese (defaulting to the latter).

The two Carmelites orders do have different calendars
