Some verses about "hair"

Hi;
Recently,my muslim friends asked me a question…

and I think I couldn’t give them a clear answer… What do you think about
these verses?

“1Cor 11:14 Does not the very nature of things teach you that if a man has
long hair, it is a disgrace to him,
1Cor 11:15 but that if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair
is given to her as a covering…”

“1)If a man has long hair It’s disgrace for him…Muslims said " How can you
say that Bible is holy…A Holy God should not be concerned about hair…
Hair is not important… The important think is faith…”

“2)How can it be “glory” to have “long hair” for women?!?!? is “hair” that
imortant? It should have said “FAITH” instead of “hair”…”

It is taken out of context. Read the next verse 1Cor 11:16.

“But if anyone is inclined to be argumentative, we do not have such a custom, nor do the churches of God.”

The explaination at the bottom of the page says… The argument for conformity to common church practice is summed up and pressed home. Verses 14-15 contain a final appeal to a sense of propriety that contemporary Greek society would call “narural”.

1.) Scripture is not concerned with hair as such, but with discipline and the meaning of our actions/appearance. Long hair (at this time the hair would have had to have been far past to shoulders to be “long”) denoted femininity. Similar to previous prohibitions against cross-dressing and the like, the prohibition against long hair was really a requirement to honor the proper place of the feminine and masculine in God’s design. When the length of hair became less of a cultural sign, the Church began to permit long hair without prescript to this passage (indeed, some orders of monks do not cut their hair at all).

2.) Long hair on a woman is beautiful, and through beauty the glory of God is visible. Thus, by reflecting the glory of beauty, it is glory for a woman to have long hair.
