Someone explain MORTAL SIN to this new forum member

My current question pertains to Justification and the loss thereof, as a result of mortal sin. I know the definition of “mortal sin” via the Catechism, but not what it looks like. I imagine “adultery” is a mortal sin, but is “lust”? Jesus spoke of that in Matt 5:28. Any feedback?

My Catholic uncle claims to be a serious about his faith, teaches RCIA etc. But he told me that “mortal sins” are only the REALLY BAD sins, and therefore confession is rare. I would be inclined to think that mortal and venial sins would be cause for frequent confession.

Catholic Dictionary:

Mortal sin- An actual sin that destroys sanctifying grace and causes the supernatural death of the soul.

The transgression of a divine law in a grievous matter with full knowlege and consent. The matter may be serious either in itself (as blashphemy) or because of the circumstances (as striking ones father or mother) or on account of its purpose (as telling a lie in order to destroy a persons character).
Sufficient knowledge of the serious nature of a sinful action is present if one is clearly conscious that the act is mortally sinful, say because the Scriptures or the Church identify certain acts as seriously offensive to God. Full consent is present when one freely wills to commit an action although one clearly knows it is gravely sinful.
 
Mortal Sin is the most serious form of sin, the deliberate exploitation of another person or persons for ones own benefit; the abuse of peoples rights, dignity and freedom for material or even so called religious gain.

Whew! I’d have to say that your Uncle . . . well, maybe he’s not as serious about his faith as he says it is. Or maybe he’s just ill-informed. I hope it’s the latter.

He is right that they are bad sins.
