I was listening to a Catholic talk show and something was said that I had never really considered. The United States has the Constitution. We have a Supreme Court to interpret the Constitution and uphold it’s interpretation. Why do we have a Supreme Court? Why do we have any court system? Because if we didn’t there would be total chaos in our Nation.

Understand where I’m coming from? (Bible, Pope, Cardinals, Bishops, Fathers, etc.)

The U.S. Constitution is one document that could turn nasty in a hurry if people took to interpreting its contents on their. I see the point you’re making. Very good one.

I think Roe vs Wade comes to mind. Councils and Church bodies are good when helping to determine the meaning or purpose of a thing. Even Lutherans have councils. But just because they are there does not necessarily mean that they are right. Once again Roe vs. Wade

Actually, the idea of our system of government was the brain-child of Benjamin Franklin, who borrowed heavily from the Algonquin Indians. Ben Frankin was a notorious “Free-thinker”.

The Catholic Church has always known that the Holy Spirit guides her decisions when her leaders meet in council. See the account of the Council of Jerusalem in Acts 15. The decision: "For it has seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things . . . " Acts 15:28. This decision-making process that began in Jerusalem has continued through the centuries.

No one has ever believed the Supreme Court was infallible, guided by Divinity, nor does it claim to be. (And I’m sure you weren’t implying that it is.) The Supreme Court is simply the ultimate law of the land, errors such as Dred Scott and Roe notwithstanding. But it is necessary for the orderly functioning of government.

So too is the government of the Church necessary. I look forward to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, but the definition of the Blessed Trinity and other conciliar decisions are final, confirmed and blessed by the Third Person of the Holy Trinity.

Lutherans and other Protestants lack this Divine guarantee.

Good analogy. The Constitution in a sense parallels the Gospels, and the functions of the Supreme Court indeed parallels in some aspects the nature of the Magisterium, both for similar though not identical reasons.
