I just had to share this, as one of my favorite power metal bands finally did a song about Catholicism!

Sabaton is a Swedish band whose songs are all about battles. Their most recent album - The Last Stand - is about, well, last stands in military history. The title track is about the the Stand of the Swiss Guard, when almost all of them gave their lives protecting the Pope during the 1527 sack of Rome.

Video:

Lyrics:
In the heart of the Holy See
In the home of Christianity
The seat of power is in danger

There’s a foe of a thousand swords
They’ve been abandoned by their lords
Their fall from grace will pave their path, to damnation

Then the 189
In the service of Heaven
They’re protecting the holy line
It was 1527. Gave their lives on the steps to Heaven
Thy will be done!

For the grace, for the might of our lord
For the home of the holy
For the faith, for the way of the sword
Gave their lives so boldly

For the grace, for the might of our lord
In the name of his glory
For the faith, for the way of the sword
Come and tell their story again

Under guard of 42
Along a secret avenue
Castel Sant’Angelo is waiting

They’re the guard of the Holy See
They’re the guards of Christianity
Their path to history is paved with salvation

Dying for salvation with dedication
No capitulation, annihilation
Papal commendation, reincarnation
Heaven is your destination
In the name of God

Gave their lives so boldly
Come and tell the Swiss Guards’ story again

Cool! Thanks for sharing! I haven’t heard this one before, nor did I know the story.

I’m not really a fan of heavy metal, but that song was awesome!

This one has been out for a little while, glad you found it. Great band and song. Love how Sabaton mix history with music.

Yeah, it’s from ‘The last stand’ album. It’s a great album; I recommend it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, though.

I had all of their other albums, but I only picked up The Last Stand last week, so it’s new to me. If I’d have realized they had a song about this story, I surely would have jumped on it sooner. This is the problem with following many bands; it’s hard to keep up with their new stuff!
