I’m a singer for a band, and we are doing the song “Back in Black” by AC/DC in a Cover. I’m particularly concerned about a line that goes:
”Forget the hearse because I never die
I’ve got nine lives, cat’s eyes
Abusing every one of them and running wild”

I’m probably being scrupulous, but I know that someone doesn’t have nine lives. Is it good to sing it though? I don’t think it would constitute heresy, especially because of how ridiculous it is and the fact that no one believes that (at least I hope)

Please, do tell me if I’m being over scrupulous about this.

It’s more of a rock and roll anthem. I doubt Brian Johnson and the Young Brothers actually believed they had nine lives. After all, AC/DC’s first lead singer, Bonn Scott, had died just a few months before recording began, having suffocated after inhaling vomit after an all-night drinking binge.

I think you may be over thinking it. Others may disagree. I am not a big Ac/DC fan and I prefer the Bon years over the Brian years. However whenever Back in Black comes on the radio, which it is AC/DC so that’s at least 3 or 4 times a day, I crank it and sing to it.

That kind of Heavy Rock music has always been a lot of cheese lyrics. Like my favorite band, KISS. There’s an art to it, can’t go to cheesy, just enough. 😆

They are not prog rock or prog metal with thought evoking deep lyrics. I love Rush and their deep lyrics, but fun cheesey lyrics are great also, even if they are questionable sometimes. I mean I am not living my life like those songs. I just try and not take that kind of stuff to seriously, I got much more important things that I need to worry about. How I am living my life, serving my Church and others. My job and just surviving trying to make ends meet.

It’s just a song. Nobody will be thinking you’re holding a class in theology. 🙂

In reality Angus Young, the lead guitarist is a life long tea totaler. I saw them in concert a few years ago and a guy that animated couldn’t have been a heavy drinker, and if he was relying on stimulants like cocaine or amphetamines would have been dead years ago.

@niceatheist, I don’t follow AC/DC that close so I will take your word on it 😉😎

Ace Frehley and Peter Criss of KISS did a ton of booze (Ace) and drugs (Pete). They should’ve been dead with the life they lived but fortunately both are sober today and still with us. Maybe not in KISS, but still around. Gene and Paul were straight edge and Ace and Pete were the party animals. That is good to hear that Angus stayed away from all that. 👍

For the Catholic connection so I don’t derail to far off topic on a Catholicforum. KISS was the UN of rock bands back in the day. Gene and Paul are Jewish, Ace Lutheran and Peter Catholic. Lol. I believe Paul and Peter are still involved with their Faith’s to this day. If I remember correctly Paul’s current wife is Catholic and very much into her faith. So they have a mixed faith marriage.
Ace I don’t know and Gene i believe is involved in his but on a lesser scale.
At least this is what I gather from their biographies.

Peter was Cat-holic? How fitting.

The guy I’ve always respected was Alice Cooper, who nearly drank himself to death but managed to get into recovery, find Jesus and these days be one of the smartest and most level-headed elder statesmen in the business. A friend of mine is a lifelong top Coop fan, so I always get to read quotes from the Coop and stuff and they’re always intelligent. Saw one earlier about how it’s wrong for musicians to be telling their fans how to vote. I remember his tour before the 2016 election pretty much made fun of both candidates equally.

The song was written as a tribute to Bon Scott. I see no problem with it.

I am scrupulous myself and those lyrics don’t bother me. It sounds like typical hard rock swagger, not a literal statement on belief in reincarnation or something.
