Retrospective for Life by Common
The first is about respect for the faiths of others. Part of it says:
“Koran and the Bible, to me they all vital and got truth within 'em/ gotta read them boys, you just can’t skim 'em/ different branches of belief, but one root that stems ‘em/ but people of the venom try to trim ‘em, and use religion as an emblem/ when it should be a natural way of life/ who am I or they to say to whom you pray ain’t right?/ It’s what’s got you doin’ right and got you this far/ whether you say ‘In Jesus name’ or ‘Allhumduallah’/ long as you know it’s a being that’s supreme to you/ you let that show towards others in the things you do/ cause when the trumpets blow and 24 elders surround the throne/ only 144,000 gon’ get home”
Retrospective for Life is an anti-abortion song. Common is a devout Muslim and has this song about an unmarried couple who becomes pregnant. Part of it says:
“Knowing you’re the best part of life, do I have the right to take yours because I created you irresponsibly?/ subconsiously knowing the act I was a part of, the start of something, I’m not ready to bring it to the world/ had myself believin’ I was thorough/ I look at your mother’s stomach and wonder if you are a boy or girl/ turnin’ this woman’s womb into a tomb, but she and I agreed/ and see, we don’t believe you would have been much more than a mouth to feed/ but someone I would have fed this information I read/ and someone, my life for you I would have had to lead/ instead I led you to death/ I’m sorry for taking your first breath, first step and first cry/ but I wasn’t prepared mentally or financially/ it’ll take more than having a child to bring out the man in me/ plus I wanted you to be raised within a family/ don’t want to go through the drama of havin’ a babies mama/ weekend visits and buyin’ chains ain’t gon’ make me a father/ for a while bearin’ a child was something I never wanted to do/ for me to live forever I could only do that to you/ the nerve I got to talk about them niggas with a gun/ must have really thought I was God to take the life of my son” and more of it says: “is this unprotected love or safe to say it’s lust?” and “from now one I’ma use self-control instead of birth control/ cause 315 dollars ain’t worth your soul” and the last line is: “you say your period hasn’t came, and lately you’ve been sleepy/ so quit smokin’ the weed and let’s have this boy”
In Christ,
Rand
