I’m in a small, rural parish. The individual who served as our organist/music director has been very ill for a long time, and isn’t able to make it to church, but she still chooses the music and sends it with her husband, and we sing it a cappella. If he’s not able to be there, he’ll hand out the song selections in advance, and we’ll continue through. But occasionally, he’s unexpectedly absent, and we (I!) am scrambling for song selections three minutes before the processional… 😉

Out of curiosity, does anyone have any recommendations for songs during Lent? We get a lot of mileage out of “Lord Who Throughout These Forty Days” and everything else that uses the same tune, but if there’s anything that people are especially fond of during this season, I’d love to keep some ideas in my back pocket.

Do you have missalettes? They have a variety of songs for the season in them.

I think the most important thing is that you pick songs that are easy to sing and that most people know, I think those are easy songs to sing:

These Forty Days of Lent (sung to Old Hundredth)

Were You There

O Sacred Head, Surrounded

At the Cross Her Station Keeping

Forty Days and Forty Nights

Lift High the Cross

My Soul With Patience Waits

I think you should have a “plan B” ready just in case and pick songs that easy to sing and well remembered-even by small ones. Peace.
