I’m not the person to listen to a tune, where the majority of lyrics are swearing. coughsomemodernrapcough However, there are certain songs in my usual library, like from The Rolling Stones, that contain one or two swears in their lyrics. Is it inherently sinful to listen to such songs? Thank you, and God bless.

They should be avoided, could you see Our Lord listening with delight to them? God bless!

If you mean songs that take the Lord’s name in vain, then I try to avoid them. On the other hand, I guess I’m not offended by e.g. “Damn, I wish I was your lover.”

I don’t know that Catholics even agree on whether or not it is immoral to say a swear word, let alone listen to one. 😛

I’m no fan of crass language. I never developed the habit and it usually makes me uncomfortable to hear it. But I’d be hard pressed to call it immoral to listen to a song with swearing in it just by virtue of it containing this or that word with no other considerations.

My music collection is pretty much all heavy metal, but I can probably count on one hand the number of CDs I own with any foul language on them. And most of the time, the word is there for a purpose.

Their are vulgar songs with no swearing in them and non-vulgar songs that do contain some swear words. I would pay more attention to the over all level of vulgarity than I would to the inclusion of one of a handful of words.

I own some songs with swear words in them. Some of them are even quite good and uplifting. One Republic’s Good Life comes to mind.

I’d like to add another side to this question. I love metal of all kinds and not only does the non Christian stuff have swearing but bad messages. Is it sinful to not get rid of it just for the pleasure of working out to them? There’s very few bands that get me as pumped up as some metal bands I started to like 5 years ago or so.

Yeah, my closest priest always said swearing in the traditional sense is not a sin — its very rude, but not a sin.

He said “jihad” is more closer to taking the Lord’s name in vain and that its much more severe of a sin than any 4 letter word.
