I believe they are still waiting – but don’t know for sure. As to applying to the seminary --why not contact them–and see what they say.
I have contacted them - today in fact. Just wanted to see what CAF had to say (specifically, Brother JR who usually knows a lot about this kinda thing).

Below is from their site: So it looks like they are still waiting for canonical status–and the ordination of their candidates. But JR may have further insight.
As the evening falls our fourth year begins.
We thank God for the grace of undisputed union with Peter
and the approval of our Constitutions by the Holy See.
We earnestly await canonical erection
and the ordinations of our three candidates.

We recommend this intention to your prayers.

Aberdeen has a new bishop, well thought-of by all, from a religious order himself, so things are looking good for them.

They don’t have a seminary though. I believe their seminarians study with the FSSP.

You can join the Transalpine Redemptorists immediately. They are completely regularized, and their constitutions have been approved. They are still waiting the official establishment of their order, which has been delayed for some time, most likely due to some sort of disagreement with their diocesan bishop, who is now retiring.

If you were to join, and then if they were to decide to send you to seminary, you would most likely go to the Our Lady of Guadeloupe Seminary of the FSSP, unless I guess, you are good enough at French or German to go to the Seminary of St. Peter in Wigratzbad.

Wonderful news! Thank you.

I have emailed them. I am waiting to hear back. After I finish my year of studying (secular university in another country, South Africa as you can see) in November I will return to the UK and hopefully they will accept me as an aspirant.

From the information available, the Sons of the Holy Redeemer are in full communion with the Church. Therefore, a Catholic can join them.

They are waitiing for canonical erection. Every new religious community goes through several steps toward canonical erection, which can take from five to 20 years.
  1. Their statutes must be approved by the local bishop.
  2. The local bishop must erect them in his diocese, usually as a public association of the faithful and then as a congregation of diocesan right.
  3. When they are erected as a public association of the faithful, the bishop becomes their major superior. He can either appoint a superior of the community or allow them to elect him. That superior would answer to the bishop. This is the current state of the Franciscan Missionaries of the Eternal Word and the Franciscans of the Renewal.
  4. Religious congregations DO NOT have a right to have their own seminary. They MAY have one if it is the wish of the local bishop or they can send their men to a seminary that is agreed upon by the bishop and the superior. For example, the Franciscans of the Eternal Word send their student friars to Mt. St. Mary’s in MD. The Franciscans of the Renewal send their student friars to St. Joseph’s Seminary in NY. The FSSP has its own seminary because it was approved by the Holy See. However, the FSSP are a society of Pontifical Right.
There is a reason why congregations and orders normally don’t have seminaries – finances. More often than not, we consolidate and send our sudents to a common school of theology, while each community takes care of religious formation within the community.
  1. Anyone wishing to join the Sons of the Holy Redeemer has to remember that there are two things at play here and they are not canonicallly related: priesthood and religious life. What is in progress here is the erection of the religious community. That, has to happen first. You cannot ordain a religious until he has made perpetual vows. The vows have to be approved by the Church. This happens when the decree of erection is issued.
We should not assume that they have not been erected because the bishop is at fault. Bishops must wait for the response from the Holy See. Even if a community is of diocesan right, the Holy See must approve the bishop’s plans. This is the journey of all emerging communities.

They are not outisde of the Church. They are simply going through the steps to erection. That can be a tedious process. In the meantime, they can recruit and form their men. They simply cannot present anyone for ordination until the religious community is erected. Given that they have the numbers and they seem to have the financial stability, it should not be much longer before they are erected. It is true that they have to agree to the bishop’s terms. The Holy See will not intervene here. Pope Benedict is very serious about bishops having control over emerging communities.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, OSF 🙂

Thank you Br.JR 🙂
You’re welcome. Remember, I’m going on the information that is available via the Internet. For all we know, there is more that is not available, which can potentially annul what I said.

Everything you have said is correct as far as I know Br. JR.

When I mentioned that the delay in canonical erection may be due to a disagreement with their local bishop, I did not mean to say that the bishop is at fault in any way. However, the Transalpine Redemptorists wish to have the ability to do certain things related to their Redemptorist heritage that the retiring bishop may not have wished to encourage in his diocese.

I met one of the Brothers (not sure what the appropriate forms of address are for religious) in the tea room after Mass a good few weeks ago. Seemed like a nice enough fellow (which is saying something as he’d only had like 4 hours sleep with all the travelling :D!).

A priestly-friend is very fond of them and is over-the-moon about the new bishop. He keeps trying to get me onto Papa Stronsay :p.

Great! If all goes according to plan, and if it is God’s will, I might be on Papa Stronsay within the next year as an aspirant.

I’ll be sure to keep you in my rosary intentions 👍.

I should also mention that the same priestly-friend wants me with the Canons Regular of the New Jerusalem as well :D. I think he just wants me out of the way!
