So, my dear husband and I are working on getting things ready for labor/delivery and one of the relaxation methods we’re going to try is music while I’m in labor. Music is a big part of my life and has always helped me de-stress…we’ll see if this works while I’m in the most pain I’ve ever experienced in my life (going al naturale 🙂 ).

Any suggestions of soothing music? I have one piano CD of Christian love songs and a Sleep Sound in Jesus CD set that my MIL gave me as a gift for the baby that helps me relax. I’m looking mainly for instrumental or really soothing, probably Christian lyrics (anything else might make me agitated if it brings up bad memories or anything lol). No classical either…please :).

So, any excellent CDs that you own and would recommend?

These recommendations may seem a little odd, but give them a listen before dismissing them out of hand 😉

Buckethead (yes, the Buckethead) released a couple of wonderful quiet instrumental albums. I especially liked ‘Electric Tears’. It’s very relaxing.

Bohren und der Club of Gore don’t have exactly a soothing name, but their music is wonderful – dark, ambient minimalist jazz. Apparently they used to be a death metal group but weren’t happy sounding like everything else, so they picked up on that instead. It’s all quiet and instrumental, very film-noirish.

Kitaro is another ambient musician; a little new agey, but still good. Lots of traditional Japanese influences. The disc I have is ‘Spiritual Garden’.

Morphine isn’t instrumental, and a couple of their songs can get a little frantic, but they’re still great. Lyrics may not be exactly what you’re looking for though – but come on, Dana Colley can play two saxophones at the same time! Like Bohren, they’re noirish jazz. ‘Cure For Pain’ and ‘The Night’ are both excellent.

Classic jazz or blues is also a good bet – Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway – and some of the quieter shoegaze bands like M83, Slowdive, or My Bloody Valentine might be worth a look too.

The Solitudes collection of cds are wonderful as well. Some have just natural sounds such as a chorus of frogs or birds, and others add soft guitar or synthisizer next to the sounds of nature (waterfalls, babbling brook, etc).

I listened to “Awakenings” as my daughter was born.

Congrats & good luck!

Really, I have to second the suggestion of Buckethead “Electric Tears” - it is beautiful. If you like great guitar work, maybe some classic Tuck and Patty?

What soothes one person will not soothe another, for me, U2 is soothing, as is Gregorian Chant, Creed, Annie Lennox, Alison Krause, Lyle Lovett, Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin, toss in some Fr. Stan Fortuna…

Find music that you enjoy, music that will distract you and energize you might just come in handy too!

Just don’t try the 1812 overture, at least not until second stage labor. . .😃
