Does every single person on earth have one? I remember reading something on here about Adams offspring possibly taking soul less humans for spouses and such. Could it be possible for these soul less creatures to still wander the earth. Is there any Catholic teachings on this in the modern day? Sometimes I wonder if it may be true with what goes on in some parts of the world. I hope this is the right section of the forum to ask this. Thanks!

I think your refering to Genesis 6…God took care of that with the flood in Noahs day. They were called Nephilim.

There are no soulless human beings.

In fact, there are no soulless animals. Soul in Latin is anima. An animal is a being with a soul.

Whoever the first humans bred with, they were human; only humans can breed with humans. And our bodies are a glorified animal; therefore every “body” comes with a soul.

maybe this is my protestant background but I thought only humans have souls…not animals. Animals can not choose to worship or deny God…humans can. Jesus did not die for animals but for humans…just one of the many things I dwell about. I should ask this question at RCIA. Though I hope animals have souls…I’ve had many that have passed and hate to think they ceased to exist.

All living things have a soul. However, only humans have a rational eternal soul. All other living things have finite souls that cease to exist upon physical death.

To be a human person one must be ensouled. human persons are a body/soul unity. the human soul soes not exist except for the body and vice/versa.

The ancient judaic teachings is that we are all shards of the souls adam. 145,000 shards or so. I do believe animals have a soul how could you be alive if you didn’t have a soul? Maybe not like a human beings soul but a “soul” nonetheless. At death something must be preserved or the purpose of life would be utterly useless. Christian Mysticism calls it the “seed atom” this all becomes soul material.

On the latter:
Also, there is the legend of the golem.

But yes, at the very moment of conception God creates the soul meant for the body.

However, there is something very interesting in your observation:
Could it be possible for these soul less creatures to still wander the earth. Sometimes I wonder if it may be true with what goes on in some parts of the world.
that some evil acts seem to proceed from “beings with no soul”. Mortal sin, in fact, kills the life of grace. It causes the death of the soul.

Christ could “resurrect” such souls - and He does so all the time, fulfilling His promises that “the dead would *hear *His voice, and those who listened would live”. However, without repentance, it is as if they had no soul.
Hear me speedily, O Lord: my spirit hath fainted away. Turn not away thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit.
May my prayer come before you; turn your ear to my cry. For my soul is filled with evils: and my life hath drawn nigh to hell. I am counted among them that go down to the pit: I am become as a man without help, free among the dead. Like the slain sleeping in the sepulchres, whom thou rememberest no more: and they are cast off from thy hand.

Yes, there are soulless individuals. This occurs when the section of the brain to which “soul” is tuned is either defective at birth (this produces cretins, who are usually institutionalized), or damaged by accident or neurosurgery. (e.g: The Soul of Anna Klane.)

However, you may be confusing inherently malevolent individuals with the truly soulless, who are not intelligent enough to do much of anything.

That is not the Church understanding of soul.

The soul does not “tune” to a part of your head. We are nOt radio sets.

The soul inhabits the entire body, which it animates. It continues to do so even after brain damage, although the human functioning would be weakened or impaired.

And souls do depart, but that is what we normally call death.

Every human being is given a human soul sometime at or soon after conception ( contrary to what some Catholics think, the Church has no doctrine at the precise moment this happens but we must leave that to God and assume that from the moment of conception God intends to create a human being).

Man never had offspring with animals or " souless " creatures, that is a fallacious and harmful legend.

As long as a person is alive he/she has a human soul. The powers of the soul may have been muted or silenced due to some type of trauma or illness but the powers of the soul are still present in potency. Their soul is present until they die. Some non-Catholics come on sites such as this and give opinions which are contrary to this and which are absolutely contrary to Divine and Catholic Truth. Ignore them. 👍

The fact that the Church hasn’t officially stated anything doesn’t mean too much; this is a scientific rather than religious issue. If the soul is not present at the EXACT moment of conception we know for a fact that it’s very soon afterward.

Right. That is why Pope Paul VI said we must always treat the embryo as though it is human ( i.e.we must assume God intends to create a human, we leave it to the Devine Will, we cannot play God ourselves by assuming he either has not already done so or that he does not intend to do so, because we cannot know until either the embryo dies or it shows definite signs of being human.) I can’t remember exactly what document I read that in. 👍

Thank you for the reiteration of dogma that I am already well versed in.

I make no pretense of being a Catholic, and have made it clear on a number of occasions that my ideas are derived from the physics of God’s creation, principles certain to be those of God alone and unadulterated by interpreters. I do not regard Biblical texts as anything other than the words of men.
